About me:
J.L. Powers is the author of THE CONFESSIONAL (Knopf, 2007), which explores school violence, racial tension, and religion on the U.S.-Mexico border. The daughter of a geologist and a journalist, J.L. Powers grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. Having spent sufficient time camping and searching for fossils in the American West during her childhood, Jessica considers herself a true “desert rat.” And because she grew up on the U.S.-Mexico Border, she is a "fronteriza," a person of the border. El Paso will always be home. She’s taught African history and freshman composition, research and argument at universities and community colleges from New York to New Mexico and currently teaches writing at Skyline Community College in San Bruno, California. Despite her bad Spanish, Jessica spent several years working as an editor and publicist for Cinco Puntos Press. Knopf released her young adult novel, The Confessional, in July 2007. A frequent contributor to New Pages, she is currently at work on other projects, including a novel that explores youth homelessness, teen pregnancy, and the outer edge of religious fundamentalism. Partly because of her latest project, Jessica volunteers at Larkin Street Youth Services, a San Francisco organization that serves homeless youth. The closest thing she has to a hobby is searching out ghost towns in northern California. She travels to as many different parts of the world as she possibly can. Mozambique is next on her list of places to visit. She had pink hair, currently has purple hair….but still wishes it was blue. She has an author website at www.jlpowers.net. ..Jessica Powers

Who I'd like to meet:
Simone Weil, who is actually dead now because she starved herself to death protesting treatment of Jews in occupied France during WWII. But still... Dona Beatriz of Angola, who was burned at the stake by the Catholic church in the 16th century because she was protesting the treatment of Africans at the hands of the Portuguese, who were enslaving them... L.M. Montgomery, who, um, is also dead...but she at least died of natural causes. I'm starting to see a pattern here. Quick, think of some live people, Jessica.... BONO! Yes, definitely BONO. He rocks! Thank you, Bono, for all you do for Africa. Emily Wells. She rocks, too. She's incredibly talented. Zola. What great music. And he does so much for South Africa. I'd love to go along when he's filming one of his news/documentary episodes, just for the adventure, and for the education. Damian Marley. I did meet him once, for a few brief moments in Albuquerque. OKAY, I'd want to meet Bob Marley, too, but I'm trying to stay away from those long departed. But I do think of him as a prophet... Hell, let me run with it. As long as I'm mentioning those long and gone, I'd like to meet Jesus, for crying out loud. He's pretty damn great, too. Maybe, maybe, I'd like to meet my maker. Oh, wait, but not just yet. Gimme a few more years, please.Details
