About me: ARTIST STATEMENT:
There is something about the instant gratification of a Polaroid picture. How you can be part of a moment, snap a button and have a new object that approximates your immediate experience. The bright colors that are a little off and the smearing of movement that occurs within the confines of each frame. Their palettes remind me of my childhood and seeing those pictures in our family albums.
Now that we are in the digital age people often wonder why I only derive images from Polaroids. Why not use a digital camera? Truthfully the paintings might look the same minus a border. But for me there is beauty in the instant product, an image that composes and reveals itself much in the way that moments unfold, a tangible representation that exists in a more physical sense than an image merely displayed on a screen.
I studied art at The University of Texas, Austin where I became very interested in sculpture and eventually installation. I love creating installations and still think of myself as a sculptor. The challenge and beauty of installation art is the process. For me art is all about the process, how the artist has come to this end product. Where he or she might be going from here and why they have chosen their materials. It can also be very exhausting. I have spent days, weeks and even months on one piece. Thinking about and analyzing the choices I've made, the piece lives for a set span of time and then gets stored away in boxes. For that reason I have always envied painters and their ability to create something that they can hang and share with the people in their lives whenever they want.
Photography has the ability to capture in real time both those special and mundane moments of life, this art that occurs every day around us. Art is in our day to day lives: cherry blossoms, odd bus stop conversations, work, vegetables, smoke breaks and bar talk. It's all about perspective. With this body of work I hope to inspire myself and others to rethink the day to day. Sometimes everything can be caught up in one frame. The prints and painting you see here are all done with Polaroids, gouache, chalk, ink and pencil. Please enjoy.
