This profile has gone through the wringer several times now. I used to have 4 profiles, for my various bands and for my book, "Five Years in Hawaii." Now I have just the one (this one, jackass).

Let's see, a bit about me: I'll be three decades old this year. I am a decorated Navy veteran. I am a musician. I am a published author. I am a published poet. I am a sometimes blogger.

I've read that intelligence is plastic, and this makes some sense to me, but I think that it is best described as the confluence of several forces in a person's life. These forces include:

* ROOT POTENTIAL: What are the upper limits?
* INTEREST: One must want to achieve.
* ACCESS: Education builds upon Root Potential.
* EXPERIENCE: Hard earned know how.
* VISION: Knowing and seeing are separate.
* VOICE: Brilliance without communication?
* EXERCISE: Atrophy is a real threat.
* SUPPORT: Close friends & true believers.

An IQ test typically measures for Root Potential only. What a person might be capable of is not the same as what they will achieve in their life. A person can grow more intelligent over time, just as a person can grow less intelligent over time. People who practice their skills daily will perform better at them than those who do not.

Those people who prefer to have an IQ score to point to because they are so anxious about being recognized for their potential seem to me to be funny sorts of people. I've been among them at times, too. No one cares if you ring the bell at a carnival by slamming a hammer down on a plunger. If you can send the mallet up to the bell and keep it there, ringing out incessantly, then you have something to talk about.

I guess my point is, Humility rains. Nobody is a complete idiot, just as nobody is of omnipotent intelligence. IBM has a computer that operates at the Petaflop level (150,000 calculations per second, for each and every human being on the planet...according to their commercial), which means that even if Humanity could somehow interconnect all of our minds and work in total concert, with perfect efficiency to boot, we could never out think the computer. All things truly are relevant.

Why waste time comparing ourselves to those around us? We should all just be what we are and leave well enough alone.
