Power, solitude and anonymity are key elements in the work of visual artist Joachim Devillé. He paints and draws locations, situations and characters: Interiors, exteriors and facades of buildings, landscapes, objects and characters are frozen to a banal, neutral and anonymous appearance, but a poetic glow adds a feeling of mystery to these everyday scenes.
In his first animation film not only alienation and mystery are central moods, they are completed with the processes of rhythmical construction and deconstruction by means of appearance and disappearance, growth and destruction. On the other hand, stilled sequences are transformed in a subtle way to new situations where aspects of time and (self)-reflection cannot be disconnected.
His work shows reality as if it was regarded at through a broken mirror, piece by piece: ideas are transformed into new points of view, always by the confrontation of the perception of several and sometimes very different situations, places and worlds. Observation are used as a starting point, but the reality they are showing is translated by deconstruction, reconstruction or 'rebuilding' which leads to the creation of an imaginative world. Fiction apparently becomes part of reality but as important is the reality that is revealed in these ideas.
Joachim Deville's inspiration comes form his daily environment, being on the road and travelling, music, literature and film. With his camera he captures poetically loaded images of small things, everyday locations or situations and landscapes. Sometimes these pictures are used as such, but they are often used for the construction of new ideas/views, as a starting point for new drawings, paintings or images for animated film.
An accurate selection and the well thought reconstruction of new images allows him to develop a personal language in which power, solitude and anonymity are inevitably linked and brought together.
