Once upon a time on the night of the full moon Joana went to the forest and came across the wolf who was howling. She came closer and said hey wolf can you teach me to sing that nice hooooowl. And the wolf said yes and asked her to open her pretty mouth, and when she did the wolf jumped in like into a deep well. Since then, the girl wanders around with the wolf inside her and each time the moon is full she lets out a wild hoooowl.
And so Joana came to London from her native Lithuania to seek out musicians- other boys and girls who had also swallowed a wolf. She advertised in newspapers, NME etc but had soon spent all her money with nothing to show for it...she was beginning to despair of ever meeting any other wolf children, when one day in January 2005 Ali Wolf saw her free ad in Loot...and soon Joana had found her guitarist.
Joana and Ali spent 5 months in hibernation honing their sound, and then in summer ’05 they added Louis Wolf (drums) and Katie Wolf (bass). In September 2005 Joana and the Wolf played their first gig. In their live performances, the dark, stripped-down harmonic and rhythmic power of the band provides the perfect platform for Joana's sensational expressive voice and her raw, naked energy.
Since that time, between regular London gigs, they have played the Rock n Roll stage at Bestival, performed at Brighton's Great Escape festival, have supported James Dean Bradfield at ULU, and recorded a live session for John Kennedy at Xfm. They also recorded their debut single ‘Purple Nights’ with Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Editors producer) at The Chapel Studios for Regal/Parlophone.
The single went on to win Steve Lamaqc’s 6 Music Rebel Playlist vote, and receive regular airplay on John Kennedy’s Xfm show. Jim Abbiss also brought his then producees Kasabian to a Joana and the Wolf gig, which led to Joana lending her voice to the title track of Kasabian’s 'Empire' at Serge Pizzorno’s invitation.
In 2007 Joana And The Wolf continued to build a faithful following, whose votes helped take the band to the 2007 INDY Music Awards in May, where they won the award for Best New Wave Act.
They were an Xfm Music:response competitor in Dec 07, and are nominated again for the 2008 INDY Music awards. They will be performing at Camden Crawl 2008. Experience one of their gigs and you too will have no choice but to hooowl!
