About me: Joanna Strong was born in Wroclaw, Poland, in September 1981. By the time she was a child she has started her journey in theatre. She was involved in many amateur theatre projects, which led her into the Theatre College in her city, where she finished her Diploma in Drama. She played in numerous Musical Theatres and many other fringe performances.
Her acting experience and fascination with psychology encouraged her to express and expand her interests in the emotional side of people by directing. In 2002 she wrote and directed a performance based on a book ‘Why me?’ written by contemporary author Juliette, the tragic story of a successful woman, whose life is changed for ever, when she is infected by HIV.
Joanna continued her studies in the National Theatre Academy in Warsaw, where she finished her Masters. In the meantime she worked in the National Theatre of Word and Thought as an actress and in the Drama Theatre in Legnica as an Assistant Director.
In 2005 she made her first short independent film (30 min long) ‘Next to each other’ – the story about lives of two girls in one city, involving complex long shots. She took her inspiration from the simplicity of European Cinema and directors like: Kieslowski, Lelouch, Truffaut, Haneke.
In her next film project, which was the music video for Polish composer Andrzej Koper ‘When nobody is watching’, she combined her love for photography and music, beauty and cruelty and her fascination with work by artists such as: Matthew Barney, Erwin Olaf, Jan Saudek, Floria Sigismondi.
She made another two music videos ‘Memorie’ and ‘Forma’ was made for Italian composer Marco Iavarone (Misound). She tried to combine the complexities of human nature with the crystalline beauty of the image enveloped in the context of space and time.
Joanna is still maturing her style and discovering new forms of expression.
