transferd fm.msg:: ...and the Award for Best Arts Coverage:Series goes to... "The Open Mic Documentary" (applause...;-) I want to thank everyone involved, especially Hotel Utah, the Freight & Salvage, the Starry Plough, Cafe International, the Missouri Lounge, Blakes On Telegraph, the Oakland Metro, Sweetwater, South Bay Folks, Red Rock Coffee, the Uptown ... The program director told me after the show that I must really know where the best open mics were because each of the performances was so good. Never a dud. I think that comment speaks for itself. Of course editing helps ;-)
I want to express my thanks to all the people I have filmed for their participation. We are now in negotiations with Comcast to cover the East Bay with the show. Stay tuned...
My series "The Open Mic Documentary" has been nominated for a Cable TV Award as the "Best Arts Coverage: Series"!!! I think almost everyone who submitted a show is on there but being nominated for an Award is second only to WINNING the Award! So I'm asking for your vote. Go to my site www. theopenmic. net read the banner and follow the link or go directly here to get the info. www. theopenmic. net/vote. php I'd appreciate your vote. If you would care to spread the word I'd also appreciate that.

Thanks for posting my letter, what a great idea. Already (just one day after sending it to my space friends of Tomkat), many have offered to help in various ways. The out pouring of love and generosity has been pretty amazing and it is great to see people rallying to his help. It is a relief to me as his sister too, since I can only do so much myself. Tomkat is trying his very hardest to get help, he isn't just sitting at home feeling sorry for himself, but it is like a crippled little David fighting the gigantic and sickly twisted Goliath (government agencies).
Big hugs and much love to all who have stepped up and those who haven't yet but are thinking about it. Allene (aka Tomkat's sister)
Tomkat doesn’t know I am doing this, though I guess he’ll find out eventually. As it stands, he is in such desperate circumstance right now, he wouldn’t be able to turn away any help he received.
Tomkat (aka Tom Rohrer) is in great need, he is ill, disabled and can’t work. As I was thinking about how I could help him I was remembering how many people he has helped on the local music scene (and beyond). He hosted the open mic at the Metro for a while (not to mention several others over the past 15 years), and he's been involved in supporting and promoting artists during that time (setting up shows, giving people/bands a break in getting a show, etc.) He has also always been very generous with his time, money and heart. He has opened his door to people, fed them when they were hungry, helped them out in any way he could when they needed it.
Now he really needs some help so he doesn’t get kicked out of his home. IF you want to help, there are several ways you could go about it. You could send money by 1. cash, 2. check, 3. paypal If there were to mail a check, you could send it to him in c/o me:
Thomas Rohrer c/o Allene Rohrer 3020 El Cerrito Plaza #172 El Cerrito, CA
If you wanted to contribute via paypal, you just need my paypal address which is adangerzz@yahoo.com
(Then I'll transfer it to my bank account and get cash for him – he doesn’t have a paypal account). You could give him cash directly if you wanted. Every teeny tiny little bit helps and it all adds up, to hopefully Tomkat not ending up homeless while he goes through the hell known as red tape.
Here is a brief description of what has been going on:
Tomkat has been suffering from some ailment as yet undiagnosed, but at this point it looks like it might be peripheral neuropathy or MS. He has fallen so many times over the last few months because he can barely walk, that he has broken a bone in his leg and one of his ribs. He also suffered a 2nd degree burn on his leg the size of my palm that he didn’t even feel because he barely has any feeling in his legs.
He has been seeking help from our dear state and federal governments for about 6 months. Around Xmas, the VA Hospital turned a depressed and injured Tomkat away because they said his eligibility had expired. (Tomkat is a vet, did you know?) He’s been trying to get on disability for months and basically has been suffering at the hands of the great evil bureaucracy as they shuffle him around from one agency to another, each one in term saying “we can’t help you.” Lately he’s learned to not just take “no” for an answer (like he did at the VA) and he is pushing back by calmly asking questions until he asks the “right” question so he can actually move up a step in this lengthy and convoluted process. He is still probably about 2 months away from actually getting any assistance, but at least he has made his way into some health care recently. So far he has had one MRI that was “inconclusive” and is scheduled to have another one done soon. He will hopefully get to see a neurologist, but there is about a 6 week wait there.
In the meantime, he has run out of money. He has sold stuff to pay his rent and I (his sister) have been helping out with groceries. I can’t pay his rent though, I don’t make that much money nor do I have any savings (spent it all last year making a record, didn’t know this was going to happen to TK). Now he is facing homelessness and still is a couple of months away from getting any financial government assistance.
Even though as a society, we don’t really live in villages any more,
International Women's Day is March 8th. This is a day when women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate 'our' Day. We take a look back at a tradition of at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.
International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. I know of no better way to celebrate International Women's Day than to get a lady elected as the President of the United States of America
The Open Mic Documentary will be shown on Berkeley Public Access Channel 28 and Alameda Public TV channel 31 in the near future, the airing dates have not yet been determined. The show is also being submitted to San Francisco Public Access channels 29 and 30.
It's the invisible woman here, just stopping by to send some big hugs and a kiss. Hope you are doing well. Send me your address and I'll send you my new CD.
