1) Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Composition in 2001, Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA), awarded with two scholarships, one from same university, and another from Ministry of Education in Brazil.
2) Master of Music Degree in Fine Arts Composition in 2006, University of Missouri-Columbia (Columbia, MO), awarded with a teacher assistantship from the same university.
3) PhD of Music Composition at University of Hong Kong in progress and under supervision of Dr Hing-yan Chan, awarded with a studentship from the same university.

Short bio:

JOAO MARCOS MASCARENHAS is an award-winning musician, performer, composer, arranger, teacher, music director, and music producer with over 20 years of experience in the industry. His accomplishments and talent earned him full scholarship from the Brazilian Government and the Berklee College of Music, where he received his bachelor degree in Jazz composition in 2001. In 2003 Joao was awarded another full scholarship to the University of Missouri where he received his Master's degree in music composition in 2005. Joao was also offered scholarship to study at the University of Hong Kong, where he earned his PhD in music composition in 2012. His doctorate-thesis is entitled The Learning and Creative Process in Music Composition and Improvisation. Joao was awarded the Rayson Huang Scholarship in Music in 2010 for his work Into the Music – Multimedia Étude no. 1, performed in concert accompanied by Yao Jue. In April 2011, his Reflected Marionettes No.1, had its World Premiere at University of Hong Kong Loke Yew Hall performed by the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.

As an educator, Joao created the course Composing and Arranging Popular Music for the Summer Institute of Art and Humanities at the University of Hong Kong. He taught this course for 3 consecutive years (July 2009, June 2010, and June 2011). In 2009, Joao was the music director and arranger for the opening night of the University of Hong Kong's Summer Institute of Art & Humanities, when theatrical works by David Henry Hwang, the Chinese-American playwright, were performed. In 2012, he created the course Introduction to Jazz Performance and Improvisation, which he taught at HKICC Lee Shau-kee School of Creativity.

Joao’s professional performing experience has seen him in demand all over the world; playing concerts and shows in Brazil, USA, France, and performing extensively in Asia. In Brazil, he worked with several national and international artists and orchestras, including Amazon Jazz Band, Symphonic Orchestra of Theatro da Paz Symphonic Jazz Orchestra of Sao Paulo. In Paris France (at the Clermont Ferrand,) he directed musical groups specialized in Brazilian music. In the USA he performed regularly at Ryle’s Jazz club in Boston, touring throughout the New England area, playing the legendary Jazz club Zinc Bar in New York City, in addition to Jazz performances at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Missouri in Columbia, and with regular tours through Nashville and the American South. In Asia, Joao worked as arranger and producer for renowned saxophone player Tran Manh Tuan in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He has worked as the music director and resident artist at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong and the Mandarin Oriental in Macau, and as a performer at JZ club in Shanghai, the W Hotel in Bali (Seminiak), and more.

Joao currently resides in Hong Kong. In addition to teaching piano/composition/improvisation, he keeps a regular performance and music production schedule. His Authentic Brazilian Trio opened the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival in November 2008. He created the Latino Jazz Trio and performed weekly at Peel Fresco Music Lounge. His Latino Jazz Trio has performed for the Radio Television of Hong and for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Joao has worked with local artists such as Ted Lo, Eugene Pao, Angelita Li, Jun Kung, Macau’s Soler Band/Acconcci brothers, Peter More, and many others. In December 2012, his Brazilian Jazz trio performed at the FreeSpace Festival at the West Kowloon Cultural District. This Jazz trio is currently performing actively in Hong Kong and China.
