3) PhD of Music Composition at University of Hong Kong in progress and under supervision of Dr Hing-yan Chan, awarded with a studentship from the same university.

Award-winning musician, composer and music director with over 20 years experience in the industry. Bachelor in jazz composition. Master in Composition. Currently completing his PhD in music composition.
Joao began his accomplished career in Brazil working with several national and international artists and orchestras, including Amazon Jazz Band, Symphonic Orchestra of Theatro da Paz, Symphonic Jazz Orchestra of Sao Paulo, Paulo Andre Barata, and You Records (USA) to name a few. In France (Paris, Clermont Ferrand,) he directed musical groups specialized in Brazilian music. His accomplishments and talent earned him a full scholarship from the Brazilian Government and Berklee College of Music. In 1999, Joao moved to Boston where he received he received his bachelor degree at Berklee in jazz composition in 2001. After graduating, he went to Hong Kong to direct two Brazilian jazz groups. In 2003, Joao was awarded another full scholarship at University of Missouri where he received his master's degree in music composition. In 2005, Joao went to Vietnam (Ho Chi Mihn), to collaborate on two CD's with renowned saxophone player Tran Manh Tuan. Joao was then offered a studentship and started his PhD in music composition at the University of Hong Kong. Currently, he is researching the learning and creative process in music composition and improvisation and is targeting to complete his PhD in 2010. In addition to teaching and studying, Joao performs regularly in Hong Kong. In November 2008, his Authentic Brazilian Trio opened the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival. After requests, Joao created the Latino Jazz Trio and performed at Peel Fresco Music Lounge from November 2008 to May 2009 every Thursday night. On June 13th, 2009, his Latino Jazz Trio performed for Radio Television of Hong Kong during the concert "Michael Jackson Hits Hong Kong". On June 19th, 2009, his Latino Jazz performed in "A Evening for Hope, Love & Care", a charity event for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Joao was also the music director and arranger for the opening night of the University of Hong Kong's Summer Institute of Art & Humanities in July 2009 where they performed works from David Henry Hwang, Chinese-American playwright. Joao also taught arranging and composition at the University of Hong Kong's Institute of Art & Humanities.
