I have never once tie-dyed a single thing. I collect bayonets, but only ones that were originally designed to be attached to musical instruments. Especially I love piano bayonets.
Music
I'm an omnivore. But from whatever genre they come, I love best the practitioners who are trying to honestly communicate real experience to somebody. Generally speaking, I've found, at least here recently, that means not the best players and singers, necessarily, but the best poets, speaking now not of the poet as writer but the poet as humble priest of the soul's mysteries.
Movies
Barbie Princess and the Pauper. Barbie Mermaidia. And yes, I know it's going to make me seem like a joiner because everyone lists this movie in their favorites, but: Barbie Fairytopia. I didn't start liking it just because it got "cool," so I'm not going to stop liking it now just because it's "outre."
Coen Brothers, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Brad Bird, Bud Luckey, George Stevens, Wes Anderson, Sophie Coppola.
Television
Nova, Frontline, American Experience. Everything my kids watch except stuff where you conjure monsters.
Books
I used to study books. I enjoyed that very much. Finished recently: Cash (Johnny's last autobiography), The Road, Harry Potter, The Second Coming, The Last Gentleman, Everything that Rises Must Converge. Reading with the kids: Beatrix Potter collection, The Lightning Thief.
Heroes
Martin Luther King. Herman Melville. Emily Dickinson. Louis Armstrong.
About me: I have two beautiful, inquisitive, cantakerous children, whom I adore. My job is to be in a band called Big Smith with my brother and cousins and fiddle player. And don't forget Roger. I write songs and play and sing for a living. Is that not a gas? I used to write some poems and stories and teach English at Missouri State, which was also, yes, a gas. I guess that's a trite set phrase, "it was a gas." A cliche. But cliched from what? Is that the kind of gas you put in a car, or the kind you huff, or the kind you blow out your woofer? The answer to that question sort of makes a difference as to whether I keep using that particular former metaphor. Could someone get back to me on that?
Who I'd like to meet: A being who knows the trick of combining complete knowledge of the human condition with perfect compassion toward it. And: Barry Corbin. Steve Cropper. Madeleine Albright.

Jody, you're the man. Trying to learn the mandolin these days. My fingers hurt and when they don't they don't move nearly fast enough. You make it look easy. Wish I would have started this when I was six or so. Not sure 30 is a good age to start playing mandolin. Hope all is well, Later
You made my daughter feel pretty special after the show. Thank you for your kindness. She made sure not to scrub off your autograph when she had her shower so she could show it off today at school. How sweet is that :)
