While today’s pop may be polished to perfection and manufactured for mass appeal, charm is one element that seems to have been sacrificed in the process. Joe Amouzou 's new album, ‘Mist Of Charms’ was crafted with an artisan’s touch. The disc was a two year labor of love, which drew on his personal experience with many different styles of African music and his extensive repertoire of global and contemporary rhythms. As a composer, writer, arranger and singer, Togolese-born Amouzou takes a ‘hands-on’ app roach to his music. Mist Of Charms is a mix of Afro Jazz fusion which charms the listener with an array of songs and styles that offer both personal insight and universal appeal. It's a finely crafted recording that draws on his passion for the global rhythms and the added skill of some of our city’s finest players.
Joe Amouzou’s latest album ‘Mist of Charms’ weaves together traditional African and World music with contemporary styles such as Soul and R&B. To Joe, the album is the realization of a long standing dream which in turn reflects his African roots. In creating this album, he moves between various African styles; the song “Djonkey” is a powerfully energetic “Gazo” rhythm from Togo West Africa; “Sentiment” is what he calls his “Togo Blues;” and “Koko Song” is a beat-driven West African Highlife rhythm similar to the Caribbean “Soca.”
Reflecting the musical African Diaspora, Joe then moves into a reggae vibe with the song “Guilty” (which has also been made into a music video) and an Old School/R&B flavoured track, “Nature of The Beast.” It is obvious that Joe Amouzou appreciates world music culture, as the sounds of the Tabla, Doom-Doom and traditional African Bell can also be heard. The album ‘Mist of Charms’ features world-class musicians, one being Denis Ziebart on Hammond Organ, Triton Synth & Steinway Grand.
Imagine: You are an North-African immigrant to Spain or a South-American trying to get into US who has not much more than a few suitcases, his ability to work hard, willing to pay with slavery and to do dirty work - work that no inhabitant of the country you want to go to would even think of considering.
You already travelled a far way and left many good friends behind that you maybe never will see again.
You stumble out of the nearly falling apart bus or the smuggler boat, where you had to pay your income of a half year to that grim looking people with hearts of stone - just to take you aboard.
You are sighing gladly that you survived the travel and now take your first steps in your new home country.
And you are soon aware: You are disrespected, treated badly, your woman is seen as a kind of cheap prostitute, other people's children don't want to play with your children.
You are thinking of your former homecountry with feelings of sentimentality and you know there is no hope: you cannot go back...
