Stripped-down and soulful. | | Influences | These are some of my musical heroes, really too many to list. I grew up listening to their music and still do, on the radio, digging through my LP collection, and, when possible, in concert (bars included). It seems to be all this old stuff, but that's not to say I'm stuck in the past. I just appreciate the music from bygone eras and invite it constantly back into my life. For newer stuff or less well-known artists, I can depend on the local radio stations here in Austin to keep me in the game, including (but not limited to) KGSR for newer indie rock bands, KMFA for a constant stream of classical beauties, and KUT for just about everything else (once the best radio station on the planet, with Paul Ray and Larry Monroe being two of the best DJs ever; with the station's new format, I'm not so sure). I also write, read, and listen to poetry and all manner of spoken word "music." Ever heard Jack Kerouac read some blues? Hopefully, some of the wonder of all this good stuff has rubbed off on me: Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Band, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Jerry Garcia, CSNY, Doors (love the ’60s!), Richie Havens, Cat Stevens, Motown, Otis Redding, George Harrison, Bonnie Raitt, John Lennon, Joe Cocker, Jerry Garcia, Traffic, Pretenders, Keith Richards, EC, Led Z, Jimi, Carlos, Stones. (2nd & 3rd albums). Blues: Muddy, BB, Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Paul Butterfield, John Mayall, Johnny Winter, Duane Allman, SRV, Jimmie V, Carlos, Stones, Paul Winter Consort / Oregon, Chicago, BS&T. Also: Bob Marley, Toots, Los Lobos, the Subdudes, Sting, U2, Wilco, Sheryl Crow, My Morning Jacket, M. Ward. Country: Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, George Strait, Dixie Chicks, Dwight Yoakum, the many unnamed great steel guitar players who gave country that classic sound. Austin & regional: Willie, Alejandro Escovedo, Gourds, Fastball, Paul Ray & the Cobras, Spoon, Patty Griffin, Bob Schneider, Kings of Leon, Malford Milligan, Ian Mclagan & the Bump Band, Black Joe Louis, the Orbans (Ft. Worth). Great Singers from the Big Band era: Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Tommy Duncan, Ray Eberle, Tex Beneke, Marion Hutton, Dick Haymes, Perry Como, Dean Martin, Lena Horne.
