Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Cat Stevens, The Black Crowes, The Who, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Foo Fighters, Jeff Buckley, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Doyle Bramhall II, Bob Mould, Ritchie Havens, Tori Amos, Def Leppard, Hall and Oates...yeah that's right...Hall and Oates, Steve Perry, Wham, Warrant, Faster Pussycat, Hasselhoff, John Tesh...can you tell where the sarcasm starts in this list? You better not say Steve Perry!!!
In a nutshell, I'm a singer-songwriter guitarist in the genre of "soulful roots rock." I currently live in St. Paul, MN with my wife Jenny and our two kids Sophia and Jack.
Aside from various garages, backyard barbecues, talent shows, friends' parents' basements, extended family gatherings, etc., I've been "playing out" since I was 19 which is a very very long time ago....back in the days when guitar strings were made of cat gut, drummers beat on animal skins with bones, and bassists...well there were no bassists around yet. Since then I've played in a variety of bands ranging from "variety" bands, to acoustic rock, to classic rock, to 80's rock, to alternative rock...some of which were all covers, some all originals, and some a mixture of covers and originals. My most recent failures include Loft, The Porn Thieves, The Careys, Minnesota Gold (or Gould if you're Canadian), and with singer-songwriter heart throb Nick Hensley in Minnesota's own rogue acoustic duo Love Songs For Angry Men.
In June of 2003, I released a solo album Wondervibe and in spring of 2009 (five damn years later) released its follow up, Sunflower Soul. Aside from all of that, I really don't like John Mayer. And I CAN'T STAND the Eagles. In fact, if John Mayer ever joined the Eagles...then I'd probably just give up...on everything. Thank God the Black Crowes are back together. Anyway, some other recordings on which I can be heard include Loft "Pavement", Jim Carey "Juliet Ave.", Love Songs For Angry Men's Live Discs I thru IV, and Nick Hensley's new solo effort which was released in February 2009.
Through meeting many many musician's over the years I've developed sort of a self-deprecating sense of humor as I've found that there are already plenty of folks in this biz who take themselves WAY too seriously. That being said...if you have actually read this far then you might have enough patience to sit through one of my shows...or at least part of it. So please refer to the "upcoming show" section of my profile if you're so inclined. And if you REALLY wanna get crazy you can go to my official website at www.joecareymusic.com and sign up on my e-mail list. In any case, thanks for visiting. Peace!
If you're around on Thursday, December 10th, we are playing a show at Mario's Keller Bar. I don't know if you've been there, but it's a very cool place. It's a comfortable space, the room sounds great and they have a stellar beer selection.
Also, we will be playing ALL NIGHT! We'll play some funky, bluesy, and soulful music. We'll project live video onto a 9 ft screen. We'll play some older material that hasn't been heard in awhile, as well as some brand new songs that've never been heard. All bets are off!! We'd love it if you'd come down and listen/party with us!
I was going to go camping over the weekend, but this is definitely NOT camping weather. So me and some friends went to check out Dueling Pianos. Those guys are amazing - they can play just about any song that's been on the radio between 1950 and 2005.
Speaking of music, I wanted to let you know about a show we have @ Station 4 on Friday, October 16th. We are debuting a project called Sonic Transformations. It is a series of audio-visual performance pieces. The first one is called "AN OBJECT TO CRAVE". It features live music and visuals based on a short story about life, love, loss, fantasy, obsession and death.
Another group of mine, The Magnetrons, which plays an exciting and innovative Livetronica set (i.e. STS9, Disco Biscuits, The Histronic) will also be playing. The night will be full of creative, interesting, high-energy music, good drinks and good times.
Here's the info:
Blood Root Mother - "An Object to Crave" w/ The Magnetrons & Thought Thieves Friday, October 16th Station 4 201 E 4th St St Paul, MN 55101 9pm / $5 / 18+
I just wanted to stop by to say hello and give you a little update on what Blood Root Mother is up to! We will be recording an EP of new music in August, and we recently finished recording a live DVD. The DVD is currently unreleased and I actually just saw it for the first time a few days ago. It features the last two performances with Tony Ellis still alive, and some footage from the tribute show we played on the night of his funeral.
There are some cool covers, as well as some NEW music that will be on our upcoming EP. We're very excited about the new music and we'd like to share a sneak peak with you. Here's a video of a new tune called Run Bobby Run:

So yeah, Prince William's agent/publicist/PR guy/whatever called us or rather called the head of our label, Sailor Mouth Records, to ask if we could play at some royal thing in a few months and we asked him for a dollar.
Anyway, there's a music video coming up very soon for three of our newest songs and there are also two new songs coming before the end of this coming week. An olm is a creature that lives in caves under Slovenia and is pretty much a glorified eel-it has no eyes but has little hands, for no apparent reason. The people who first discovered them thought they were baby dragons. Yesterday I watched TV.
