Joe Giardullo is Brooklyn-born, and raised on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. He grew up on R&B music, playing tenor sax in club and regional bands and moved north to the Woodstock area in the 1960's.
It was a rich environment for hearing and playing original music, and it was here that he got his first soprano saxophone. During the early 1970’s, Joe studied Indian classical music with Dr. Rosette Renshaw. Unknown to Joe, Dr. Renshaw sent copies of Joe’s experimental scores to Nadia Boulanger in Paris. On the basis of his scores, Joe was accepted to study in Paris with the renowned teacher but he could not attend .
In the mid 1970’s Joe moved to Holland to explore the thriving European improvising scene. Amsterdam was alive with great music- Burton Greene, Han Bennink, Charles Tyler, Philip Wilson and a great local scene as well. It was a good season to be living and working there.
After a short period based in Amsterdam, Joe returned to live 100 miles north of New York. He continued to work on his experimental scores, called “Gravity music”. A recording of these scores was released to critical acclaim and public indifference. After a few years, Joe slipped into a 10-year hiatus from public performance, although he continued to play in private. Then he met up with saxophonist/trumpeter Joe McPhee one night at a club. That meeting in 1991 marked the beginning of a continuing collaboration. And it has also reintroduced audiences in the US, Canada and Europe to Giardullo’s music.
Since then, Joe has been active in the US and Europe with many of the most regarded musicians: JOE MCPHEE, STEVE LACY, MILFORD GRAVES, BILL DIXON, MARILYN CRISPELL, HARVEY SORGEN,KARL BERGER, TANI TABBAL, CARLOS ZINGARO, and many more, and has had his music released on important American and European labels. His newest recording RED MOROCCO (for 14 musicians) is on the Rogueart label from Paris. Joe's solo soprano disc NO WORK TODAY- Nine for Steve Lacy was named to the year’s best lists and continues to receive airplay in the US and Europe. And Joe’s music continues to be featured on AFRICAN BEAT, the Voice of America show that has 40 million listeners across Africa.
Joe's new music features his Language of Swans trio, with the criminally unheralded drummer Todd Capp. And Joe tours in a duo with longtime associate, drummer Harvey Sorgen....Myspace Layout Generator-Layoutgen.com ..

Thanks a lot for your kind words, Joe. Hope to see you again soon among us, here in Portugal. I still remember well the concert you gave in Teatro Ibérico, here in Lisbon, with Bobby Bradford, Ken Filiano, Rodrigo Amado and Alex Cline. Your music is a great inspiration to me.
