Einstein sought in science what artists seek in art.
Einstein attempted to escape from the gloominess and terrors of society by connecting with the whole universe.
Einstein wanted sense and beauty in the physical world. God does not play dice with the Universe,
He hoped to find a hidden design that would somehow reassure him of the beauty and artistry of the world.

The following comes from "What Life Means to Einstein: An Interview by George Sylvester Viereck,
"The Saturday Evening Post, Oct. 26, 1929, p. 17.
Some portions of this interview might seem questionable, but this portion of the interview was explicitly confirmed by Einstein.
When asked about a clipping from a magazine article (likely the Saturday Evening Post) reporting Einstein's comments on Christianity taken down by Viereck, Einstein carefully read the clipping and replied, "That is what I believe." See Brian pp. 277 - 278.
On Jesus
"To what extent are you influenced by Christianity"
"As a child, I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene."
"Have you read Emil Ludwig's book on Jesus?
"Emil Ludwig's Jesus," replied Einstein, "is shallow. Jesus is too colossal for the pen of phrasemongers, however artful. No man can dispose of Christianity with a bon mot."
"You accept the historical existence of Jesus?"
"Unquestionably. No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life.
How different, for instance, is the impression which we receive from an account of legendary heroes of antiquity like Theseus. Theseus and other heroes of his type lack the authentic vitality of Jesus."
"Ludwig Lewisohn, in one of his recent books, claims that many of the sayings of Jesus paraphrase the sayings of other prophets."
"No man," Einstein replied, "can deny the fact that Jesus existed, nor that his sayings are beautiful. Even if some them have been said before, no one has expressed them so divinely as he."
On Buddha, Moses, and Jesus
Our time is distinguishedby wonderful achievements in the fields of scientific understanding and the technical application of those insights. Who would not be cheered by this? But let us not forget that knowledge and skills alone cannot lead humanity to a happy and dignified life.
Humanity has every reason to place the proclaimers of high moral standards and values above the discoverers of objective truth. What humanity owes to personalities like Buddha, Moses, and Jesus ranks for me higher than all the achievements of the enquiring and constructive mind.
What these blessed men have given us we must guard and try to keep alive with all our strength if humanity is not to lose its dignity, the security of its existence, and its joy in living.
From Goldman, p. 88.
# Goldman, Robert N., Einstein's God? Albert Einstein's Quest as a Scientist and as a Jew to Replace a Forsaken God (Joyce Aronson Inc.; Northvale, New Jersy; 1997).
Christianity and Judaism
If one purges the Judaism of the Prophets and Christianity as Jesus taught it of all subsequent additions, especially those of the priests, one is left with a teaching which is capable of curing all the social ills of humanity.
It is the duty of every man of good will to strive steadfastly in his own little world to make this teaching of pure humanity a living force, so far as he can. If he makes an honest attempt in this direction without being crushed and trampled under foot by his contemporaries, he may consider himself and the community to which he belongs lucky.
From Einstein's book The World as I See It (Philosophical Library, New York, 1949) pp. 111-112
Greater Things Than Jesus
It is quite possible that we can do greater things than Jesus, for what is written in the Bible about him is poetically embellished.
From W. I. Hermanns "A Talk with Einstein," October 1943, Einstein Archive 55-285
The Kingdom of God
One has a feeling that one has a kind of home in this timeless community of human beings that strive for truth. I have always believed that Jesus meant by the Kingdom of God the small group scattered all through time of intellectually and ethically valuable people.
From Goldman, p. 98.

Why do we struggle? What is the essence of struggle, what is the essence ambition? Surely, conflict is the essence of ambition.
Why are we so everlastingly ambitious at all levels of our existence?
The so-called spiritual man, the sannyasi, the man with a beard, the politicians, the merchant, the man who is acquiring knowledge?they are all ambitious.
Why? Why this conflict and struggle?
From: "To LOVE without Conflict" J. Krishnamurti.
"Mind is held in a pattern; its very existence is the frame within which it works and moves. The pattern is of the past or the future, it is despair and hope, confusion and Utopia, the what has been and the what should be. With this we are all familiar. You want to break the old pattern and substitute a 'new' one, the new being the modified old.
?You want to produce a new world.
It is impossible.
You may deceive yourself and others, but unless the old pattern is broken completely there cannot be a radical transformation. You may play around with it, but you are not the hope of the world.
The breaking of the pattern, both the old and the so-called new, is of the utmost importance if order is to come out of this chaos. That is why it is essential to understand the ways of the mind.?
Is it possible for the mind to be without a pattern, to be free of this backward and forward swing of desire?
It is definitely possible.
Such action is living in the now. To live is to be without hope, without the care of tomorrow; it is not hopelessness or indifference.
But we are not living, we are always pursuing death, the past or the future. Living is the greatest revolution. Living has no pattern, but death has: the past or the future, the what has been or the Utopia.
You are living for the Utopia, and so you are inviting death and not life."
"Living Is the Greatest Revolution" - The Book of Life (September 25) J. Krishnamurti.

This was said by the great Harvard psychologist William James. It's really good.
"The greatest discovery of my generation is that you can change your circumstances by changing your attitudes of mind."
It's really powerful, just think about it for a bit.

Mother LOVE; A hurricane Katrina mother and infant who escaped to safety inspired me to do this painting....read my blog about it.
The next one was done for a Mpls group call for a poster about protecting Senior citizens. I think our Elders are not appreciated enough and have no platform to address youth...Mabel Mandela still teaches the children in the tradition of her people. I wanted a living subject. My painting along with one other won the poster contest. Check out my blog on it as well.

What Will Matter
Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear.
So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from
or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.
So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought but what you built,
not what you got but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage, or sacrifice that enriched,
empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.
What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.
Make It A Beautiful New Year because obviously...you ARE living a life that matters. I'm honored to call you my fri
