Singer, Song-writer and student doctor, the latter of which seems incompatible with the former 2, are the words which best describe Joel Brown whose soulful, soothing and syrupy sounds can be heard resonating from his website.: www.joelbrown.co.uk His musical journey began in the warm, tropical climate of Jamaica and is unsurprisingly rooted in a church-singing, hand-clapping, musical family background. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1985 to parents Al and Marjorie Brown to whom he says he owes every talent, success and achievement to. He describes that if it was not for the solid Christian upbringing and motivation from his parents he would certainly not be as confident about himself, his morals and his talents as he is today. He remembered days on the way home from school, church, the supermarket or wherever for that matter were always used as an opportunity to rehearse or compose a song and the family would sing together at different church services and functions. Joel and his sisters Joanna and Danielle have grown quite closely together and have always and will always sing together in a group called New Seed. At the age of 16 Joel found himself uprooted from the only place he thought he could ever call home when his whole family decided to relocate from Jamaica to England. The family settled in very well in Bradford and Joel excelled at school but still missed Jamaica greatly. Joel had a strong interest in sciences and felt a pull towards medicine so completed his A-levels and applied to medical school. After being accepted by Leeds Medical school he decided to defer starting his medical course for one year. This gap year can be described as the pivotal point of Joels music. He took back up the song writers pen which he had laid down while studying his A-levels and began to write songs again. He engaged with many online music communities to establish relationships with producers and other independent artists and eventually made a few collaborations with some of them. He met a talented musician, arranger and producer in Leeds called Kennusoke Tokutani whom he worked with on many projects some of which you can listen to in the jukebox on his website (www.joelbrown.co.uk). A fire was ignited in Joels heart to write songs that would bless Gods heart and inspire many people to appreciate the good things in life and ultimately come to know and love their Creator. Now an interesting piece of the puzzle is yet to be revealed. Joels desire to sing and record music is in many ways incompatible with the rigorous and demanding requirements of a full-time medical course and subsequent career as a doctor. In the eyes of many of his friends and family it was simply one or the other but He believed that he could do both if he was determined enough. He started medical school in September 2004 and is now in his second year and starting the third in September 2006. He has been able so far to continue writing and recording, establishing contacts in the industry, leading praise and worship at his home church El-shaddai International Christian Centre Bradford, singing with his family and studying his course with the aim to become a reputable cardiologist.
