Sounds Like
Combine the grit that can only come from a band born and bred in the wide open spaces of the Little Karoo, South-Africa, with the energy, edge and attitude of bands like Metallica and Soundgarden, the melodic flavors and colors of Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins and lyrics that make it clear that this band is fearless in terms of speaking its mind. Add a good dash of blistering guitar work and a double shot of solid rhythm. And just when you think you know what they're about, they’ll pull out their acoustic guitars...
Jo Ellis decided to go it alone after his former band, The Fathers of Invention, decided to split up in October 2005. Jo was the main creative force behind the band, whom he fronted and played guitar in for almost two years.
Jo’s debut-album, Fear And Science, (recorded in his own BlooRoom Studios), was released in April 2006. The event took the form of a nationwide live broadcast on (SA rock DJ) Johan Botha’s show “Tempo” on (SA radio-station) RSG. After this, Jo appeared on the SABC 2 music-program “Pitstop” in May 2006 and won their “Tref & Trap”-chart for newcomers with a convincing majority of votes.
After playing a couple of shows with various musicians that helped out, it became clear that, in order for his newfound creative freedom to come to fruition, a new band would have to be put together. A band that would be on the same creative wavelength.
In June 2006 Jo started jamming with his sister, Zaan, on drums and long-time friend and accomplished bassist Panna Dekker. Jo had been in different bands with both earlier, so the chemistry was there immediately. Everything clicked and The Jo Ellis Band was born. What more could any artist ask for?
They have since been touring non-stop, introducing more and more people to their unique brand of good, hard-edged rock ‘n roll with their energy-fueled live shows, winning loyal, die-hard support along the way.
Below is a live performance of House On Fire. It was recorded at various venues at the KKNK, Oudtshoorn, South Africa.
