(PLEASE NOTE: THE SOUND-CLIPS ABOVE HAVE BEEN COMPRESSED BY MySpace AFTER UPLOADING, RESULTING IN A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF SOUND-QUALITY.)
I am a record producer who has worked with many local and international artists from various genres on recordings that have received high critical acclaim and commercial success. I am also an accomplished guitarist and bassist and have played on many projects. Years of experience have taught me a couple of things:
A number of things need to come together to make a great recording: The song - the arrangement - the artist - the instrument - the performance - the room - the equipment - the mix. It is my job as producer to get the best out of each link in this chain and guide them along the whole process.
I find it hard to work in an environment that doesn’t inspire me, so I don’t expect anyone else to have to do so. I usually use my own 60 sq. meter BlooRoom Studios for tracking* and I always do my mixes here. (See “The Studio” or www.myspace.com/blooroomstudios) This specially designed studio is a variation of a classic design that many great producers (Daniel Lanois, George Massenburg, Bill Bottrell, etc.) love to work in. I’ve worked hard to give my studio a feel that is warmer, friendlier and more creative than the usual sterile feel of many studios.
Even though we will be working hard on your project, I believe that it should be a fun, positive experience. I am essentially offering you a chance to take a break away to the kind of place that you would really want when you are recording – amazingly beautiful, quiet and relaxing – away from the stresses of normal living while working on your project. Most artists who have worked with me once keep coming back for future projects. I also have accommodation available.
While I believe that it’s more about the skill of the person using it, I take the importance of good equipment very seriously. This means that I have spent money where it really counts, hand-picking each piece of equipment that I use, importing pieces I want from all over the world. I trust it enough to use it on my own recordings (with the Jo Ellis Band). You will also notice that my arsenal of equipment is always growing to give you the best bang for your buck.
* PLEASE NOTE: Even though I prefer working in my own studio, I am open to tracking at other locations that might be better suited to the project. My whole setup is very mobile for this very reason. Discuss this possibility with me if you feel that it will benefit your project.
MY RATES:
This is where another big part of my philosphy comes in, even though it has nothing to do with production itself
I don't take more than I need. This means that you are not paying me such low fees because you are getting a product of lesser quality. You are paying less because I can afford to work for less. I GUARANTEE THAT YOU WON’T FIND A BETTER DEAL ELSEWHERE.
I have calculated my rates to provide the best possible service of the highest quality at an affordable price, even when traveling-costs are brought into the equation. Please note: while you are paying me for my services as producer, you are getting the use of a fully equipped studio in on the deal at no extra cost! Speak to me about accomodation.
I have set a rate of R500 for an 8-hour day on projects that won’t take more time than that, but on larger projects I prefer to work out a package deal so that I can give you the best price possible.
I offer basic mastering for free on all projects I do.
