Joe Mack was born and raised in Lawton, Ok., and didn't care much for Rock & Roll, Bluegrass or Jambands at all until he moved off to Stillwater, Ok., to go to college. Well, he bought into the university program, but didn't necessarily get the piece of paper all the fellow investors were going for. But he did broaden his horizons. And most importantly, he got really good at playing guitar.
Good may be an understatement - this "musical architect" has traveled from coast to coast bringing his panhandle pickin' and madman melodies to the masses. He's been fortunate enough to share the stage with folks like Ryan Adams, Vince Herman & Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon), Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Randy Crouch, Travis Linville, Tim Reynolds, Speakeasy, Stoney LaRue, Carter Sampson, Split Lip Rayfield, Umphrey's McGee, PoDank String Band and many others on stages across the country.
Many live releases, most notably his 2005 release "One Track Mind: Live at Daddy Woo's," has sold nearly 1,000 copies out the trunk thanks to his longtime friend Erik Allen at Daydream Recordings. The homegrown, homespun collection feature's Joe and an array of toys like Gatorade bottles, cowbells, and what nots performing his "hits" like "Born to Roam," "Pictures of Planets," "Ain't Nunna Her" and "Fallin'."
Labor Day weekend 2007 solidified his approval status among the Red Dirt rockers when he won the "Open Mic Singer/Songwriter Contest" at the Grape Ranch Winery's Red Dirt Harvest Festival. In good form, Mack took the mainstage on Sunday evening with his friends Randy Crouch, Dave Teegarden and Tom Skinner for a kickin' and a pickin'.
Mack was the pivotal member of Tahlequah based acoustic jamband The Skillbillies, and since then has gone on to perform regularly with another Tahlequah troubadour, the legendary Bill Erickson & the New Migrant Workers, and is no stranger to being a "hired gun" whenever duty calls.
If you dig Michael Hedges, Keller Williams, or little round guys with big beer appetites and too much time on their hands, then Joe Mack is the choob for you.
