Joe Magurne has chronicled his life’s experience’s so often that when asked, he can rattle off the details without pause.
Born in the suburbs of Long Island, New York in 1978, to two parents without musical knowledge. His mother a full time homemaker, and his father a vice president on Wall Street. The only music Joe heard as a child was in family car rides. It was about the time Donna Summer was heating up the air waves with “on the radio”, that they can say was when he first showed any kind of interest in music. With two uncles that were avid listeners of music from classic rock to blues and jazz. Their influence on Joe’s childhood started to form. At the age of 3 Joe was taken to his first rock concert at Nassau Coliseum, in NY. To see a group from the 80’s called Squeeze. After that night his life would never be the same.
Around that same time his Aunt and Uncle bought him one of those paper drum sets that every popular toy store sold. Little did they know that it was going to spark a beginning of a life of playing and performing music. The paper drum set didn’t last too long, cause it was never made to be played like this. Joe played anything he could find around the house to bang on, from old Maxwell coffee house cans to old pots and pans. It was time for the real thing. Christmas came and there it was a brand new “real” blue sparkle drum set.
Drumming and lessons led to more musical instruments like piano in the years to come. All of it coming to him pretty easy for a kid at such a young age. Playing in various jazz recitals as a kid in both piano and drums, his shyness for performing never came out. In elementary school his ability to play the drums was so great that the local high school used him for two years because he was more talented than anyone else they could have put up there. With drummers like Neil Peart from Rush, Carter Beauford from the Dave Matthews Band,Buddy Rich, Ginger Baker, and various jazz greats his influence in music grew from every style.
At a family barbeque Joe did something for everyone that not many of his family members even knew he could do, and that was sing. Always singing as a kid in private and to shy to show that side of him, he belted out a few Squeeze songs. Most of them couldn’t believe the voice that came out of this little kids mouth. They were all in amazement.
Inspired from an Eric Clapton concert in 1995, Joe decided to try his talents on yet another instrument the guitar. Just messing around, and learning some cover songs, by Squeeze, Dave Matthews, Eric Clapton etc. It was in 1996 that he wrote his first group of songs. Joe built a small recording studio and started to make some of his creations come to life. Not many people heard his work at the time, because he wasn’t please with everything he was coming up with, and was also afraid of the opinions of others, Joe kept it under wraps.
Some years go by, and after meeting Dan Harvey, and Matt Trinkwald, from the cover band circuit, he finally got the courage to let some people who have great talent, listen to his music. They were amazed, they never knew he wrote or sang, especially like that. Both of them wanted to work with Joe and play all the songs he had created. In 2002 they played their first concert for people at Tribeca Blues in New York city. This was the first time Joe would perform his personal songs and sing in front of a large audience. The response and feedback was great, better than they all imagined.
They have now played many shows in and around New York, even opening for such main acts as, one of his idols, lead singer of Squeeze Glenn Tilbrook, Duncan Sheik, Edwin Mc Cain, and countless others. All these performers loved the music they heard. Glenn Tilbrook even invited Joe to sing a duet with him recently in Albany New York, and the two have become fast friends.
Joe Magurne now has a good following in Long Island ,that like the rock pop, and positive outlook of his songs. Always singing and playing guitar now, and recording more and more songs, he has just started his path to bringing his music and influences to more and more people. He always said, “ I just want to write and play music that if you were sitting in the car and it came on the radio you wouldn’t want to change the station”. “ If I could do that I would be happy no matter who likes it or not.”
