   About Joe Sweet
Joe has been performing nationally since eighteen years old. He started his musical career at the age of nine in Frankfort, NY. Landing lead roles in his grade school operettas to making all state in chorus, he focused his energy on singing and song writing. Joe recorded his first piece with the former band Nine Ball which led him to a 1995 SAMY, (Syracuse Area Music Award) nomination for best male vocalist. Nine Ball was gaining momentum and received attention from both independent and major record labels.

Since then, Joe has played with Jomama and the Funkdaddys. The band recorded their first album, (Live at Tinys) in 1999 and it sold over 1000 CDs in a short time. In 2001 Joe went into the studio to record his first solo album titled “Sounds” with his band the Soultrane. While recording their album, Joe and the Soultrane were nominated for another SAMY. This time for best jam band.

Joe has performed with the likes of moe., Medeski, Martin, and Wood, The Violent Femmes, Galactic, DJ Logic, Keller Williams, Charlie Hunter, Tim Reynolds, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Soulive, Karl Densons Tiny Universe, Vince Welnic, Dark Star Orchestra, Max Creek, and The New Deal, The Legendary Wailers, Otiel and the Peacemakers, Al and the Transamericans, Donna the Buffalo, North Mississippi Allstars, and John Browns Body.

What’s going on now?

Joe finished his fourth solo album titled “The Greatest Gift.” He is touring acoustically, and playing with his band Brand New Sin. The new album is available for download at apollotunes.com. If you would like to listen to Joe with Brand New Sin please visit www.brandnewsin.com.

How do you describe your sound?

I like to describe my sound as a smooth mix of folk, jazz, and blues with an original voice and sound. Somewhere between Ben Harper and Paul Simon. The lyrics are comforting and nurture the soul. It’s also very relaxing and easy to listen to. It makes great driving music.

Where did you learn how to play?

I learned how to play chords by watching my friends. When it came to applying them I would sit in my room all day learning my favorite songs by ear. I usually stumbled across a chord I thought sounded good and write my own vocal line over it.

What are your musical influences?

My musical influences range from early rock and roll to jazz and funk. I really got into live music in the 80’s. They made it look so fun to be in a band. Prince has always been one of my favorites. As I got older I started listening to more artists like Paul Simon, the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers and Phish.

What makes your act, your music unique?

What I think makes my music unique is the things I write about. I want to connect with people on a deeper level. I do my best to stay positive and look to the bright side of things. I’m really big on spirituality. I think it’s important to be grateful for what we have and to share it with others. I’m always thinking of ways to explain the different sides of love. Sometimes I do it through a story, and sometimes I do it by referring to a certain place or feeling. I also like when people get their own ideas of what my songs are about. It could make it more personal for them to have their own meaning. I like to write with that in mind. Some days I’m feeling one way about a song and the next day I think another.

Ten DANK things you can do to help legalize marijuana (in no particular order).

1. Write a letter to a policy maker. This can be local, state or federal level-if we all take the time to do this it makes a huge difference. Take a few minutes to an hour to draft a letter-then once a week take five minutes-send it to a different official, when there is a bill related to marijuana you will have a good base.
DANK recommends using a government website or visiting http://www.makepotlegal555.org to find address information for legislators.

2. Encourage others to write their legislators-each time you write to one, pass the name and address around to your like minded friends-get them writing in, too.

3. Volunteer for a Pro-Cannabis event! Look on online, maybe there is one in your area-there are several on the DANKinfo website and at least once volunteer for Seattle Hempfest-you will be impacted in unimaginable ways.
For more info: http://hempfest.org/drupal/Volunteers

4. Attend a Pro-Cannabis event! Bring your friends and family members-especially those that would like to be better educated on the drug war and related issues. See the DANKinfo website for a list and once again, I must say (maybe I am biased) at least once in your life attend Seattle Hempfest-the third week of August.
See http://www.hempfest.org/drupal for more info.
Another good choice is the Global Marijuana March (www.globalmarijuanamarch.org).
Check the website for it-there is likely a march planned near you—if not see #9

5.
Support organizations such as LEAP, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php), where the proponents of changing the law are those whom have enforced it and seen the failures first hand. Methods of support include donating, volunteering, passing out fliers, attending events, passing on info, re-posting MySpace bulletins, etc.

6.
Donate money to those organizations who are influencing policy change-great examples are NORML (www.norml.org),

Please go to this site and read the petition to stop a bill that will no longer allow people to grow natural foods, you can support the petition right from the site by entering your info you cast your say in what will happen....please take the 1min it will take to help stop the governement from destroying all of our natural and organic food supplies. My family loves to garden, this will no longer be allowed. My family buys from small road side farmers, this will no longer be available. I try to keep chemicals out of my children by buying organic foods, there will be none to buy. Let not allow this to happen, your voice counts and we need you to take the 1 minute to help stop this crazy bill. Do your own research on it, I did, this is very real and very scary on my diffrent levels.

Farmers Under Attack...

This urgent message is from our correspondent, Linn Cohen-Cole:

We have less than two weeks to stop the take over of family farms and ranches, organic and natural foods.

H.R. 875 and S. 425 [and similar bills such a H.R.
759]

We need to rally people immediately.

The new administration is pushing new farm controls through Congress as fast as possible and have coordinated the bills so there will be no debate and the committee meetings are closed.

Transparency, change, undoing Bush's regulations, giving the public time to comment, grassroots anything? Our entire food system and thus our health is being decided without the public knowing and those who do know have zero access and the media is absent and they are moving at warp speed to sew this up.

Would you put these out, in this order, showing the article as you do so people are more likely to read it? They are imperfect but the closest I've come to explaining how the game is going to be played.
