Bands I'm in: Town Mountain, Firehouse Rhythm Kings, Keep off the Grass, er-hu/banjo duo with Guogang Li, Common World Collectvie, El Trio Permeable...
The recordings on this page are my compositions and were recorded live by the Common World Collective: Joe Troop (fiddle, vox), Peter Kimosh (bass), Andy Thorn (banjo), Brevin Hampden (congas, cajón, drum kit). The back up vocals were overdubbed by Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz, except on "Por Caer". That's all me.
Influences
blugrass drive, SWING, Andalucian concept of "duende", Japanese minyou, Muslim call to prayer
I am a fiddler and banjo player, and I love to sing. I grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, and I learned to play in high school from some of the greatest musicians out there. I'm lucky to be from that region of the state. I always intended to make it off music, but then I got really into languages when I was in college, and I lived abroad in Spain for a couple years. I lived in Japan for another couple years after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill, and I was an English teacher in a remote village in the Japanese Alps, Kamimura. To make a long story short, I'm a musician and language/culture lover, and I either make money off of gigs, or teaching/interpreting Spanish, Japanese and English. I play lots of gigs here in NC, and I tour around the country playing fiddle with Town Mountain. That's a little about me...
