What do you get if you combine ‘blistering power’ with ‘scorching vocals’ and a whole lot of attitude?? The distinctive pop/punk sounds of teen sensation Joe Ward.
Reading these words caught my imagination so I thought I’d arrange an interview with this young British artist.
On the plasma screen in front of us, emotive images from the first cut of the video which will shortly launch his debut single remind him of just how far he and his dreams have already come.
The sound is down so we can talk. “What are you thinking, Joe?” I ask. He answers without looking away from the video, a multi-media sensory assault, “I don’t want to write songs which are not reflective of someone my age. Being a teenager is great fun but it also comes with lots of stresses and struggles of its own. I use humour a lot in my music because life through my eyes is pretty funny and sometimes really incredibly peculiar! My music reflects that, but I also want to communicate that even though we are young, we sometimes show more maturity and depth than we are given credit for”.
Joe is no stranger to music. “My parents’ house revolved around music. We had a Pro studio there,” he says,” instruments and artists in and out all the time, many chart stars, part of my life from year dot,” Joe recalls. “It was really only a matter of time for me to make the decision that music would be fundamental to my life and my career.”
“My upbringing and the chances I had to perform showed me what was possible in this business,” he says, “it taught me that success doesn’t just happen, you have to go out and earn it.” So, back in 2004, Joe put ambition into action and started writing material for his debut album. Several years, gazillions of torn up pieces of paper and rejected songs later, Joe has finally honed his writing skills enough to have signed a recording deal with London based indie ‘The Junk Label’.
“So how do you know which tracks to pitch to the Label?” I ask. Joe grins and I start to get the feeling that although he is prodigiously talented, he doesn’t take himself altogether too seriously. He cues a track for me to have a listen to and I have to say by the end I find myself singing along!
Joe spent most of August in Cyprus playing some acoustic gigs and recording tracks for his debut album. He will be returning to Cyprus in October to continue work on album tracks.
