I work in the music business as a stage lighting technician and designer as well as designing outdoor architectural and landscape lighting. I spent most of my life travelling.I made an insane decision one weekend to go with a friends band when a motorcycle race got rained out in 1979 and have been involved in the music business ever since.I had the great fortune to follow my dreams and kept knocking on doors and asking questions and worrying people.I worked with some good friends and neighbors in my first band ever The Embers a beach band with a great Los Vegas style floor show ,those were the days we spent 2 weeks at a time in myrtle beach at the landmark hotel in the summer,a little band called Alabama was the house band at a club called the Bowery . left the Embers to work with another local great beach band called the Band of Oz who at the time had a large club light system, even pyro and a bubble machine.Worked with a great cover band called Cirkus who had fog, pyro and lotsa lights and a great frontman who threw a heck of a party thanks for the fun memories Steve.I next worked with a Raleigh band Nantucket who had just released their 4th album/1st on the RCA label called No Direction Home,we did a headline tour and played some pretty big places and supported some bands as well, after Nantucket got dropped from RCA a few of us crew guys ended up doing different things.I also worked with a few cover bands over the years,Shotz a great cover band,Mynx whose lead singer Chuck Dallas went on to sing for the east coast powerhouse Sidewinder,Eddie Stone from Doc Holliday put together a cover band called Rajun,No Vacancy a great band who played everything from Steeley Dan to Punk,Bareback a great cover/original band out of Atlanta who wrte songs with Bruce Blackman of Starbuck fame... I worked with a another Raleigh act called Glassmoon who had a record out untill 1984,while they were in the studio I rented out some lighting I had put together thru Ray Carrol from the switch
that we took out of a nightclub he had and we started renting production to some regional touring acts coming thru the switch and thru associated sound as well as travelling the east coast club circuit
doing some big east coast tours with Billy Ocean/ Nightranger/Blackfoot/The Outlaws/Firefall/Molly Hatchet
I was in Atlanta doing production for Firefall and called a buddy who taught me alot about lighting with RA Roth
at the time a huge touring lighting co ,I left a
msg at the shop I was in town,he called me back later and asked if I could drop by the arena tomorrow to see their production with Kool & the Gang,I did not know this would turn out to be my first major arena tour,I had someone come from Raleigh to take my gig over and got on the bus and went to New Mexico. One afternoon we had a different opening act,I was at the light console one afternoon after focus and this guys walks up and asks would I do lights for them for the next couple shows, then he goes onstage and proceeds to setup 2 turntables on a banquet table it was a brand new act called Run DMC,We also had the Dazz band on the tour as well as a girl singer Shannon.
I also got the chance to meet Jim Chapman who designed such tours as The Jacksons Victory tour and Madonna.
We did a HBO special at the worlds fair in New Orleans.
After Kool and the Gang ended I went back out with Glassmoon on their new tour with the new MCA record as tour manager as well as lighting designer,I worked with Dave Adams thru his solo album and tour as well can't say enough nice things about Dave Adams he treated me more fairly than any band I had ever worked with and trusted all my judgements and decisions even with 2 musicians I suggested for his solo tour, thanks alot Dave and thanks for letting us talk you into taking us to Bermuda for a 5 week paid vacation ,heck all we had to do was play 2 short sets 5 nights a week, that customs thing was sure a pain though,so much so I went back to Bermuda with another band who asked me to take care of shipping their gear did I really sit thru 5 weeks of top 40 cover tunes for a 2nd paid vacation in Bermuda? After Dave Adams I worked with a few local lighting production companies for awhile and Did lights and drum tech for PKM another great Raleigh band with a record out, they actually sold out dorton arena back when WQDR was a rock station and played original music,I worked with Joan Jett on a tour and after my buddy her LD left for another tour I did merchandise as well as LD,Joans drummer Thommy Price who also played with Billy Idol paid me the nicest compliment ever and asked me how long I played drums before I did lights cause I hit every crash he hit.I also got to dabble in band management with some great friends from Tenessee called Hard Knox sort of like Guns and Roses an original rock band who actually sold out a show at the Switch in Raleigh that WKNC help promote with another local band called the Point who Kelly Holland of Cry of Love fame was singing with at the time ,I also managed ,booked and ran lights for the Point after they decided to do all original songs,we were so close to a record deal,we were working with Warrants management company Concerts West/ Ken Hewlitt who brought Zepplin to America in the day,we drove a van and pulled a trailer to Los Angeles and did I believe 10 showcase dates the record company paid for everything and we got to watch Warrant film the Video for Cherry Pie,the guys from Warrant who were pretty big at the time were some down to earth guys, they not only came to our shows, but Jani the singer hosted a dinner/margirata/shooter party for us after we played the Roxy,it was weird girls were screaming.. as we walked up the strip.Jani had a nice new house with a pool we ended up at and much against my and his managers sons advice,Jani and Mitch took a late night ride in Jani's vette ,We played a club in Greensboro a few months later and Warrant opened for Poison the same night at the coliseum,we went to the show and as we walked in Donnie told us Brett Michaels had called in and quit that evening Poison wouldn't be playing,Jani came out made the announcment, and said if you folks care we will be goin to party with our good buddies the Point at the Carousel Lounge, needless to say the crowd that showed up couldn't fit in the door. There was a great jam session as Warrant took the stage. What a great show, someone has this on video somewhere. We also opened for our good friends Trixter on a weeks work of dates .The Point played a while longer on the club circuit and Kelly went on to sing with Cry of Love,I did a Whitney Houston tour and started what was to be a 3 week rehersal and got a phone call I had waited for for a few years to work with Bandit Lites out of Tenessee to do a small tour with Dan Fogleburg,I left rehersals and flew to TN. I worked with Dan Fogleberg,The Oak Ridge Boys XMAS TOUR,then came back home and got a call, could I possible move to Nashville and do a year tour for a guy named Alan Jackson who is the biggest Andy Griffith fan and asked me if there was anywhere in Raleigh that had any show stuff the year we played here,,Toured with John Michael Montgomery,Billy Ray Cyrus one of the most humble guys in the world and used to meet alot of sick kids before his concerts,Tim Mcgraw,Little Texas,Blackhawk,Faith Hill, did record company showcases in a studio for Terri Clark,Ty England,Lonestar.Did videos with Tim Mcgraw for Down on the Farm at a crossroads intersection in Louisiana & I Like It I love It in Texas,Did video with Alan Jackson
for Gone Country in Chattanoga TN,Did video with Blackhawk
for Big Guitar in Nashville studio.Met Garth Brooks in our warehouse while doing a photo shoot,he really is a humble guy.We did a lot of one off stuff Brooks and Dunn corporate show for Freightliner. Also got to do a few months of shows on WWF wrestling including Wrestlemania in LA and the Slammy Awards. In 2000 I got a call to work with a new act called The Trans Siberian Orchestra,my friend Bryan the LD for KISS designed the show and we were both blown away in rehersals by the talent in the band,I can't believe I was a part of this great group and tour for 4 years.I Operated lights for 3 Doors Downs Better Life Tour 2001 I was doing lights for Mothers Finest in a club in Winston Salem when I bumped into an old friend who had production on their tour and needed an LD talk about being in the right place at the right time,a great bunch of guys from Mississippi, we were on our way to York PA to do a show the morning of 9-11-2001,I was always the first person up on the crew bus ,We were playing a fair and had a long ride and later then usual load in,I stuck my head thru the bus curtain and asked the driver if he wanted some coffee,he said turn on the satellite something just happened in NYC,as I turned on the tv I saw the second plane hit,we got in the venue and I have never seen so many people listening to radios or watching tvs,we called in our office and the shows were still on,there were alot of bands on tour Nickelback were also with us and it was very hard being seperated from your family in such a crazy time for us all, several bands including 3DD cancelled some festivals they were supposed to fly in to over the next few weeks the tour was overall a lot of fun Nickelback were a great bunch of guys.A month off then back to the Christmas Lasers and Pyro of TSO, I did the band Live on a promotional Budweiser summer tour playing on production from a state fair to a theatre with my light plot. Thanks to my good buddy and lighting designer Brian Hartley www.bryanhartley.com
And the great TSO band and crew guys. I currently design and install outdoor landscape and architectural lighting.I still design and operate stage lighting I just don't tour 10 months out of the year anymore.I am always interested in short tours or european tours and keep a valid passport.I also do some computer stuff for friends, built several websites.I designed and maintain the myspace site for my good buddies Nantucket, thanks to my buddy Dave Z from TSO who turned me onto myspace as a way to promote music on the web.I work shows with Nantucket when my schedule allows and we just did a big reunion show at Disco Rodeo in Raleigh NC with PKM and Sidewinder May 11th 2006
