  • Bio

Joey started writing songs when he was about twelve, mostly Monster Mash style novelty stuff about werewolves, voodoo dolls, satanically possessed hotrods and the like. He's written hundreds of the things but the early novelty material is consigned to the vaults. Now that he's in his embittered dotage, Joey scowls to think of such youthful follies - his latterday subject matter is the stuff of life - disappointment, repetition, dementia and futility. Still prolific, he daily vomits up torrents of cynicism to gratify an undeserving public. This incarnation of Hooverville has been gigging for a couple years now, playing rock venues and retro cabaret clubs. Tight yet loose, rocking yet understated, eclectic yet distinctive - the band inspires envy and resentment in all who witness its power. Apt chords and lyrical insights are delivered with a dangerous, sometimes fatal precision. Of course stretchers and paramedics are on hand but still many punters attend gigs unaware of the risks. The poisonous rows between band and frontman have become legend. Often the musicians can be seen shaking or sweating profusely as they tackle a difficult fingering or subtle diminuendo, aware of the reprisals awaiting those who fail to deliver. Yet despite seemingly intollerable conditions they still come back for more. Is it simply the blackmail, the beatings, the death-threats? Or do these brutalised performers derive some semblance of pleasure from songs by "The Master" (as Joey insists all refer to him). Perhaps we will never know as they are denied writing implements and have had their tongues removed - well it worked for Mark E Smith. PS: The band are, as pictured on the left, Joey (singer), Alex Ward (guitar), Jem Doulton (drums), Dave O'brien (bass), Luke Barlow (Piano). Photos by Sam Green. He did a great job - you have no idea how ugly we are in the flesh. See us live - cheaper than a freakshow and almost as enjoyable. PPS: sorry the blurb is virtually illegible. You call it ineptitude - we call it a test of your dedication. .... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..............Make photo slide shows at ..onetruemedia.com........

In no particular order: Randy Newman, Mahler, The Beach Boys, The Birthday Party, David Bowie (Pre- 1980), early Elvis Costello, Kevin Coyne, Ben Folds, Ken Nordine, The Kinks, Tom Waits, Schostakovich, Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, Robbie Fulks, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Elliot Smith, Foetus, Oscar Brown Junior, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan (not when he's finding God), Mozart (generally the stuff in minor keys), Mr Bungle, The Beatles (sorry - it's compulsory), P-Funk, James Brown, Bugsy Malone (repeated childhood viewing explains most things about Hooverville), Halloween novelty records, The Curb Your Enthusiasm Themetune, Dory Previn, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, spooky fairground music (NOT the band Fairground attraction), The Velvet Underground, the Brian Eno rock Albums, Will Oldham, Tom Lehrer, Captain Beefheart, Pere Ubu, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa. (Note how ending on a Z makes the list seem almost alphabetical. If only we liked Abba and ZZ Top - THEN our influences would seem comprehensive. You wouldn't need any other music at all.) .. .. ..MyGen.. ..Profile Generator.. .. .. ....

That cup you are holding doesn't appear to be the most effective of weapons considering that the others have rather sharper implements.
