Joey started writing songs when he was about twelve, mostly Monster Mash style novelty stuff about werewolves, voodoo dolls, satanically possessed hotrods and the like. He's written hundreds of the things but the early novelty material is consigned to the vaults. Now that he's in his embittered dotage, Joey scowls to think of such youthful follies - his latterday subject matter is the stuff of life - disappointment, repetition, dementia and futility. Still prolific, he daily vomits up torrents of cynicism to gratify an undeserving public. This incarnation of Hooverville has been gigging for a couple years now, playing rock venues and retro cabaret clubs. Tight yet loose, rocking yet understated, eclectic yet distinctive - the band inspires envy and resentment in all who witness its power. Apt chords and lyrical insights are delivered with a dangerous, sometimes fatal precision. Of course stretchers and paramedics are on hand but still many punters attend gigs unaware of the risks. The poisonous rows between band and frontman have become legend. Often the musicians can be seen shaking or sweating profusely as they tackle a difficult fingering or subtle diminuendo, aware of the reprisals awaiting those who fail to deliver. Yet despite seemingly intollerable conditions they still come back for more. Is it simply the blackmail, the beatings, the death-threats? Or do these brutalised performers derive some semblance of pleasure from songs by "The Master" (as Joey insists all refer to him). Perhaps we will never know as they are denied writing implements and have had their tongues removed - well it worked for Mark E Smith.
