JoeyJoel, Guitars, Non Pedal Steel, Vocals - Paul Dominguez, Bass EXTRAORDINAIRE! All of the great bass playing is Paul. Paul and I perform as a 'Duo,' at many of the private Art Galleries, and Coffee Houses. I've played with many, but Paul is a rare combination of power and melodic style. Paul is the mainstay in this band. Our drummers are currently 'Loud Lou,' and 'Wild' Bill Crandle. We alternate as individual schedules permit.
JOEYJOEL GOES To Texas - That was a great trip! Played some great gigs, and met some awesome people, and great players. I have a lot of it recorded. The first two songs I put up now, were done in Humble Tx, at Rock, Wine, & Blues. GREAT Venue! Huge stage, huge PA, 8 monitors, room seats about 500.
I met my backup band on the way to the stage; comprised of a Bass player, and a Drummer. I was expecting a keyboard player, another guitar player, and maybe a harp player. Didn't work out that way, so, I did it as a three piece. It was a bit tricky, as the other guys were learning the songs as I was playing them - on the spot as we were playing...
The beginning of a couple of the songs were a bit rough; 'Cheatin Hearted Woman,' for example, but it all more or less balanced out, while not perfect, the songs got across. It was not like having one's own band, like having Paul Dominguez playing bass, where he can about read my mind as to where I'll be goin with a song... but we worked it out okay and managed to have fun playing to a good crowd. Most importantly, the audience liked what we did..
On the first two live recordings in Tx, I'm playing a Greg Bennett FA 1. It's sort of like a tele, and it's got an excellent, well playing neck. I played that guitar through the entire tour, and just love it. So much in fact, that I'm using it on all of my gigs out here.
On the last song on this player, I'm doing an acoustic free jam based on the song 'Can't Find My Way home,' by Stevie Winwood. I'm playing my Greg Bennett Acoustic Guitar, (ASDR) with Rosewood back and sides, and Spruce top. I recorded that one in my bedroom with my Olympus LS 10 hand sized Pocket studio grade stereo Linear PCM Recorder. Actually, I recorded most of the gigs in Texas with that pocked sized unit. On the 'Amplified Acoustic/Electric, version of 'Hot Wind Blowin,' (it's got a sort of a medium swing feel). I playing with Paul on Bass, but with a really great LR Baggs, M1-A, Acoustic/Electric pickup. So this version of 'Hot Wind,' is just me and Paul playing straight, and live into the LS 10. no overdubs.
On the other recordings the primary electric guitar I'm playing is a Greg Benett AV 7 through a Music Man 50 RD, with vintage JBL's.
On 'You don't Love Me,' I'm playing my Greg Bennett Avion, (AV 7). Avi plays the first guitar solo, while I take the second. David K is playing Drum, Buddy Charles is playing Harp, Yasha, Keys, Paul Dominguez is on Bass.
On 'Too Many Drivers,' David K is playing Drums, Avi is playing the first Guitar solo, while I do the last one. Buddy Charles is playing harp, Yasha keys and sax, Paul Dominguez on Bass. (We had a lot of fun playing this song :)
On 'The Things I Used To Do, Tim, 'Blind Sax', is playing Sax, and does a great solo. David is playing Drums, Paul Dominguez is on Bass, Yasha on organ. I'm playing Guitar, Avi playing 2nd Guitar. Avi takes the first solo and I take the second guitar solo.
Well, 'Sleepwalk' ain't the Blues, but I love that song. and it is a classic piece of American music. I really wanted to try it, so I grabbed my lap steel (the Artisan) and this is what we got. This is an early recording of it. I've improved on the steel, and look forward to doing more recording on it. Mike Leahy on Drums, Bob Horton on Guitar, Yasha, Keys and Sax, Paul Dominguz on Bass, and myself on lap steel.
On 'All Your Love,' David K is playing Drums, Yasha is playing Keys and Sax, Paul Dominguez on Bass, the Harp player was a drop in, Harp, Avi on 2nd Guitar, (he takes the first solo), and myself on main Guitar, playing the last guitar solo. The recording is a bit damaged, but overall it was a good jam so we kept it.
