   About Johannes Moser
JOHANNES MOSER
CELLIST

With a brilliant technique and charismatic flair, German-born Johannes Moser has set himself apart as one of the most compelling cellists of his generation whose impassioned playing is filled with personality and emotion. He has been hailed as “greatly gifted” by the Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times described him as an “imaginative soloist . . . finding internal conversations, lyrical insights and even humor in the solo part.”

Johannes has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Symphony, Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic and Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin. He works regularly with conductors of the highest level including Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Jurowski, Franz Welser-Möst, Christian Thielemann, Pierre Boulez, Krzysztof Penderecki, Neeme Jarvi and Paavo Jarvi.

His North American schedule for 2008-2009 includes a return to the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert Blomstedt and debuts with the Toronto Symphony with Gunther Herbig, St. Louis Symphony with Ed Gardner, Cincinnati Symphony with Alan Gilbert, and Seattle Symphony with Gerard Schwarz. He returns to New York and Chicago for recital appearances at Lincoln Center and the University of Chicago. This season also sees his third tour of Japan and engagements with the Israel Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, RTE National Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Essen Philharmoniker. In Fall 2009, Johannes will make his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and Bucharest under the baton of Mariss Jansons.

Last season, in addition to return performances with the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic, Johannes made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst at the Blossom Festival, where the Cleveland Plain Dealer said he “played with agile brilliance and vast expressive character.” In Spring 2008, he played chamber concerts with Midori and friends at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center, and in summer 2008, he joined Midori and Jonathan Biss on a tour of trio concerts in Europe.

Other highlights of previous seasons include appearances with the Vancouver Symphony, Colorado Symphony, SWR Stuttgart, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Radio Symphony Orchestra of Saarbrücken, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Malmo Symphony Orchestra and a tour of Italy with Riccardo Muti and the Cherubini Orchestra. Johannes has performed at many festivals including the Verbier Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Gstaad Festival, Kissinger Summer Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, as well as the Colorado Music Festival and Brevard Music Festival.

Born in Munich in 1979 as a dual citizen of Germany and Canada, Johannes began studying the cello at the age of eight and became a student of Professor David Geringas in 1997. He won first prize in the 2000 Davidoff Competition in Riga, the 2001 Mendelssohn competition in Berlin and was the top prize winner at the 2002 Tchaikovsky Competition, in addition to being awarded the Special Prize for his interpretation of the Rococo Variations.

Johannes has received two ECHO Klassik awards for his recordings on Hänssler Classics. Released in 2006, his first disc of sonatas by Shostakovich, Weinberg and Boris Tchaikovsky won an ECHO Klassik 2007 award for Young Artist. He received his second ECHO Klassik award in 2008 as Instrumentalist of the Year for his Brahms and his Contemporaries Vol. I album of sonatas by Brahms, Fuchs and Zemlinsky. That recording was followed by Brahms and his Contemporaries Vol. II, an album of Strauss, Herzogenberg and more Brahms. Johannes’ much-anticipated concerto debut disc, which features the complete works of Saint-Saëns for cello and orchestra with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, was released in Fall 2008.

Lieber Herr Moser,
Hallo, Meine Name ist Jeehoon Chung (Johannes ist meine Saintname lol), und ich bin ein "Violinist"(I kenne das nicht auf Deutsch :p) von Ohio, USA.

Ok.. I think I need to stop writing in my super-fractured German here. I've been taking German since last January, and it's still quite challenging. My mom lived in Stuttgart for a long time before, that way we have lots of friends and so-called family there but I was the only one who didn't speak German among us. I hope next time visit would be a lot more interesting since I can at least order some food at restaurants! lol

I take lessons 1~2 times a month over weekends in New York (actually I'm moving there this fall!! exciting!), but your concerts with New York Phil were 2~3 days before my lesson and I totally missed it! I'd known you way before then, so I was quite upset about it. But I listen to your Brahms cd a lot, and I really hope I can make it to one of your concert in a close future when you have one either in east-north America or Germany!

Viele Grüße,
Johannes
