The General's Son EP is a giant leap for Portland indie-rockers Johan the Angel, parading a jovial yet puzzled atmosphere of epic folk music. The EP culls standard folk songs of banjo and guitar that could have easily been written by Sufjan Stevens then adorns them with texture and curiosity in the vain of Olivia Tremor Control while maintaining the song definition of Death Cab for Cutie.
As their third release, husband and wife team Brett and Britt Pedersen create a fictitious world that follows the experiences of a young soldier and son of a Revolutionary War general who would rather run away with his love than attempt to maintain his father's wartime reputation. The General's Son EP explicates the balance of idealism against pure responsibility in a time of need.
Written and recorded over the past year from Provo to Portland, Johan the Angel has surely created a magical release with The General's Son EP.
