I have great respect for the early pioniers of electronic music like Varese, Henk Badings, Dick Raaimakers, Jan Boerman, Ton Bruynel and many others.
I'm also influenced by the jazz. To name a fiew; Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Albert Ayler, Jusef Jateef, Eric Dolphy, Miles Davis...
But also I find mutch inspiration in the music of; Bartok, Stravinky, Frank Zappa, Morton Subotnick, Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Pink Floyd, Robert Frip, Jaap Vink, John Cage and many many others.
And last but not least by a great veriety of "world music"
Sounds Like
My music (or audio art) find it's roots in the "Classical" electronic music of the early 20st century .
My current works on the CD "Out There" (except for “No Exit”) evolves around the extensive use of granulation technics. This gives me a wide palette of complex sounds and compositional structures
The compositios are inspired by astronomical views of galacties, star clusters, nebulas etc. But also the express the qualities of the natural elements and forces that are involved in the cosmic processes.
I was born in April 1947 in Haarlem (The Netherlands)
My 'musical carrier' started when I was about 8 years old
with the harmonica in an ensemble of the playground club.
At 9 years old I had my debut in a concert with that
ensemble at an theater in the Smedestraat in Haarlem.
When I was 10 years old I joined the 'Sint Joris Drum Band'
where I played the signal trumpet and at the age of 16 a friend from the
drum band invited me at his home and introduced me to the music of
Bartok. I must admit, until then I wasn't aware contemporary music. So
it was a real eye-opener for me. From there I started exploring other
music like jazz (Bebop, Modern jazz i.e.).
My first record was 'Brass Bag', a trombone choir with
Gerald Wilson Arrangements on Fontana Pacific Jazz. And then I came
across electronic music. I was home.
I started making my own electronic music with a simple
cassette recorder, then my first tape deck and a pair of microphones. I
learned about electronics's and build a few project's like an simple
oscillator and a stylophone.
Later I bought a second tape deck and build a simple mixer.
In 1972 I bought my first synthesizer, a Synthy AKS.
Later in 1980 I finally quit my job as a dental technician and did
a course at the 'Institute for Sonology' in Utrecht the Netherlands
(analog sound syntheses and composition of electronic music). Around the same time I started to work as a studio technician at a small AV-studio.
From 1987 to 1989 I did a course about "The Esoteric
Approach of music" with Jan Duindam. A course about the regenerative
powers and psychoacoustic qualities of music. During this course I also
learned the basics of overtone singing and in 1989 I explored the art
of overtone singing with Diem Groeneveld.
Check it out! I wrote a free book on music production! It's for total beginners, but if you aren't new to music production, maybe you'll still learn something... at least you can send it to your friends who always want to ask you a billion questions about music production! It's free so...
