Mention singers such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Dionne Warwick and Betty Carter, and I am in music heaven - writers like Burt Bacharach, Cole Porter, Carole King and Joni Mitchell are the inspiration behind my music. Classic soul and Jazz that stands the test of time. Heartfelt, thoughtful lyrics and beautiful melodies, created with love and played with soul. Born in the North East, and growing up in a small town, lacking in diverse culture and going to a school with no music lessons available, I was lucky to have parents who loved Jazz music and played it in the house on a black box record player. From the first time I heard my folks old jazz records playing, I learned every melody and word to songs such as 'With A Song In My Heart', "Autumn Leaves' and 'Time after Time'. This started me off on my musical journey, discovering Jazz, Soul and Motown - the music of The Funk Brothers, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, gave me the need to surround myself with musicians and start recording and playing in some of Londons' great venues. My live shows have included The 606club, The Cafe In The Crypt, Pizza Express, supporting, The Blind boys of Alabama at Camdens' Jazz Cafe and entertaining the Sultan of Dubai in the Royal Jumeirah, writing and recording with Acoustic Alchemy, as well as backing pop stars Enrique Iglesias and Leann Rimes. Acoustic, organic & up close and personal is how I love to perform, to show the depth and intimacy in my voice, inviting the audience inside my world for a little while. I was recently voted the number one artist in the popworldpromotes' unsigned artists chart, (www.popworldpromotes.com) and I showcased my first single, "Give It Away" on T4's popworld show. "Give it Away'' also made it to the top 30 finalists of O2's undiscovered event 2007. "In A Sentimental Mood'' from ''Live At The Jazz Cafe'' EP, was featured Courtney Pines' Jazz Crusade in May 2007. I am currently focusing on writing and recording songs for my new album, something with a soulful, magical vibe....so watch this myspace! JO's TRACKS NOW AVAILABLE ON iTUNES.
