A discovery of folk music from dark Britannica. 'John Barleycorn Reborn'
explores seasonal birth, death and rebirth on this double CD. Our cycle began
at Lammas 2007 (1st August), a day traditionally known for 'the first fruits
of the harvest'. Pre-orders began on this day. All orders also receive a free
complementary thirty-three track download only set of further music. (Available to ALL for free from the week beginning 23rd June 2008).
This compilation explores the darker side of British folk music, evoking the
mystery of our ancient past and peoples, the strangeness of their beliefs, arcane
traditions and the remnants of this carried down the centuries as folklore.
The set has an extended booklet with articles, essays and explorations of the
album's concept.
The album is a collaboration between Cold Spring and Woven Wheat Whispers, a
folk music artist community and legal download service. Curated by Mark Coyle.

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
TWILIGHT FOLK CLUB PRESENTS… CIRCULUS plus SYD ARTHUR LIVE AT ORANGE STREET MUSIC CLUB CANTERBURY
ORANGE STREET MUSIC CLUB (01227) 760801
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 26TH 8.00PM TICKETS £9/£8 IN ADVANCE CIRCULUS
‘British band Circulus have almost single handedly reinvented English Psychedelic Folk Rock for the 21st Century…..their sound is totally unique coming across like a mixture of medieval English Folk, Fairport Convention and Ozric Tentacles! ‘This band just leave you wanting more, playing a wonderful mix of psychedelicised folk whilst hankering to a more pastoral time, but always feel uncomfortably bang up to date. The songs are a fantastic mix of heady summer jigs & ballads, sung with a crystal clear Englishness that can make you come over all unnecessary. This is prog/folk spot on in every way, and probably the only band around who use a Crumhorn, Cittern & Rausch pfiffer????......the audience is sent home happy. Seeking medieval inspiration is not in itself new – Gryphon and Amazing Blondel spring to mind – but Circulus marry this with vintage 70’s space-rock a la Hawkwind/Gong’. Power to the Pixies! Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
