Influences
The Old Timey thang in every direction and scratchier the better.
It is always interesting to watch what happens when people from different musical backgrounds get together. John Boy’s Mule is an ever evolving blend of influences that seem to capture a spot somewhere in between Old Time, Bluegrass and Folk Rock. We’re not sure we would claim to pigeon hole a specific genre, to do so wouldn’t do the genre justice for sure. But if we could have a small slice of a space somewhere in between we suppose that would suffice. All of us in the Mule love music – all kinds. We all love to play acoustic instruments and we love spending time together. The most rewarding part of playing is finding the ‘groove’ and when you’re in the ‘groove’, so is your audience. That’s why we play. There is so much good music out there to play, it’s a joy when we can all interpret it to create that Muley sound in the end.
After a few years of Rockygrass campground jamming and carousing , JBM started in Park City, Utah in 2005. Since then the band has evolved spreading it's muley sound throughout the west. We like the "Olde Time", we like the "New Time". Musical influences are endless with this band. Check out our most recent tunes above with our friend Rod Riley who blessed us with his musical presence over the last year. After Rod went back to Nashville, Damien Rommets has been filling in very nicely on the dobro and can sing the shizzy. Our newest band member is Rex Flinner, the older brother of Matt, who also plays the crap out of a bunch of instruments.
