About me:

I live in Underhill, Vermont. I lost my thirteen year old son, Ryan, to suicide on October 7, 2003. At the time of his death, Ryan was a student at a middle school in Essex Junction, VT. It was revealed in much greater detail after Ryan’s death that he was ridiculed and humiliated by peers at school and on-line. In memory of Ryan and in just a few months after Ryan’s death, I spearheaded the Vermont Bully Prevention bill H.629 during the 2004 legislative session which was signed into law as ACT117 on May 18, 2004. He also successfully led the passage of bill H.630 pertaining to suicide prevention education in public schools during the 2006 Vermont legislative session which became ACT 114. I became outspoken about the need for more education and prevention of bullying, cyber bullying and teen suicide throughout the United States and Canada. Ryan's story and the accomplishments in response to this tragedy have been told world-wide by countless print and TV media such as the CBS Morning Show, CNN, Inside Edition, Good Morning America and radio programs including the BBC World Radio and NPR. Primetime with Diane Sawyer devoted an entire episode to cyber bullying and Ryan’s story on September 14, 2006 called “Cruel Intentions.” My wife Kelly and I also appeared in the PBS Frontline special called “Growing Up On-line.” My ninety minutes student assembly presentation begins with a short video collection of home movie clips and still pictures of Ryan as a way of introducing Ryan to them. I then begin to tell the story of Ryan’s life and the factors that led up to his suicide. The audience gains a perspective from inside a family of a child who is a victim of bullying and cyber bullying. They also gain a deeper understanding of the devastating impact of a teen suicide on a family. There are many powerful life lessons imparted, including forgiveness and finding ways to turn a tragedy into change and hope for others. Thirty minutes at the end are set aside so the audience has the opportunity to ask questions. I have been told by administrators after every presentation that they have never witnessed before a speaker who captured and held their students’ attention so completely and had such a lasting impact too. I encourage you to visit a website named for Ryan: http://www.ryanpatrickhalligan.org for more information.

this girl wanted to die. i sat down and helped her. i told her story's i knew from people who comited suside in my life.
For people that have tempter probs, i told them to get your angrer at something your good at.
    like sports.
Im a 13 year old that plays hockey on the ice, i feel proud of what i have done and i'm gonna do it for the rest of my life.
a lot of people out there are looking up to your stories.
Im sorry about your son..i'm gonna keep helping people. i want to help... one of my goals is to make a girl in rehab have a smile on his/her face
i know you have a lot of stuff to do but this stuff came to my heart and i just wanted to share.
this suside stuff needs to stop.. but sometimes you cant control it.. and everyone needs to open their hearts and lend them a hand..
    your story changed my life.
it be cool is you write back but you million lives to change.

    mr. halligan,

like i said when i added you, my mother heard your story recently over at the middle school in stroudsburg. she was deeply touched, and came home and told me all about what happened to your son. i am deeply sorry. bullying is horrible, and i see it everyday in school. it used to happen to me too. the loss of friends, the feeling of just not wanting to wake up or do anything. i'm sure you know who Miley Cyrus is. she is the star of Disney Channel's Hannah Montana. i recently read her book, and she endured hard core bullying when she was in 6th grade. these girls would shove her into bathrooms, and threaten her bodily harm. when her mother called the school, the principle didnt really do much about it. and the parents that saw these girls ganging up on, the girls' parents nontheless, just laughed it off. it was horrible for her. i just now twittered to her, and numerous other celebrities, your website in memory of your son. and hopefully they all twitter it out to their fans so the message gets out. that bullying must be stopped in our schools. God Bless you and your family. what you are doing is truly amazing and inspiring.

I just posted a ruf cut of my new song about Bullying called "Me". My daughter has been bullied this year and this reflects the pain it has caused our family. Thank you for your voice. Please feel free to use the song if you can!

John, Thanks for accepting my friend request. I so admire you and what you are doing. The epidemic of bullying across this country needs people like you, and all the parents of bullied children to take a stand that we will no longer accept this behavior! I was so saddened by seeing your story on Oprah. As the parent of a bullied child I know all too well the devastating effects it can have. I am blessed that my son is still here. When I see or hear stories like yours, and the ones recently I must stop and say............"There but for the grace of God go I"

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all that you are doing!
