Portsmouth has produced some strange bedfellows over the years from Charles Dickens, to Peter Sellers, and of course the singer/pianist Joe Jackson… So I guess the last suspect is the most appropriate to John, who was also born in this Naval city.
After spells in Bristol and Ealing Broadway, John has now settled near a place with a castle, river and English countryside, which befits his gentler style of pop writing. Take the song "Far, Far, Away", where a driving surf guitar riff meets a simple Neil Diamond-type harmony, culminating in a Neil Finn rousing chorus and rising backing vocals.
John writes the music and uses guest vocalists such as Dave Loughran and Lucy Thatcher to perform his music. Bands such as Zero 7 and Massive Attack have take a similar approach as did the Alan Parsons project when flares were really “OK” to wear…Taking the Myspace approach of getting music out there to punters is proving a neat way of getting feedback and one that John has embraced as part of his promotion “Without Myspace it would have been very difficult to really find out how my music was going down with people, your friends and buddies will generally say nice things about your music, but a someone you don’t know can be a lot more honest”
So what music gets JH’s juices going then? “Well as I piano man I have to take my hat off to people like Elton and Joe, I don’t claim to have lots of obscure influences on my music, pop wise I would say the main ones have always been Jeff Lynne, Paul Simon, and bands like World Party, The Lightening Seeds and Devine Comedy” So who does John rate at the moment “The most recent CDs I have bought include The Zootons, Gnarls Barclay, The Editors. Sadly at the moment the major labels are just playing it very safe at the moment just mass producing the same old tripe..”Richard Hawkins 2008

I say, I was at the time huddled in the corner of my Gentlemen's Club in Khartoum. Ear phone eagerly at the ready and a-tunin' constantly my faithful crystal set as it modulated over the short wave, cracklin' and splutterin' out the shameful news that our Brave Boys in Blue were being stuffed by a load sheep shaggin', hyme singin', ale swillin', coal diggin' TAFFS. Course I blame this Adam's chappie. He sounds incapable t'me and of course since the event we have suffered another terrible end at the mercy of a load of Brummies wot!!! GUFFOR!!! He must go!!! Salt in the wounds too as Harry Judas Redcrap seems to be doin' jolly well with the four bees. Oh well must dash. I'm orf to watch the stonin', no cricket here today. Toodle Pip.!
