I can't possibly say how much I miss John Hartford. Steam Boat Pilot, you are sorely missed. I keep chugging out my own little songs and staying out of tall buildings, all thanks to you John.
I was recently given a John Hartford and Chris Thile jam session recording. It sounds like it's in a restaurant, there's a cash register opening and closing and a some interesting conversation. Does any one know who's playing guitar? A couple of times it sounds like maybe two guitarists? A woman, perhaps?
My son's grandparents recently gave him a copy of Aereoplain for his 11th birthday. Mr. Hartford lives on & continues to inspire the generations to come.
John is one of the select people on earth that can write great music AND play it just as well. His unique (extreemly melodic) banjo style had so much expression in every last phrase. Coupled by his vocal expressions and ability to "hit any note- whether by banjo, fiddle, guitar, voice, or tapping away with his feet while ripping the best banjo solo you ever may hear, it never is a wasted moment to come back and listen to any of my Hartford collection. Now with these youtube videos- mabey some of you folks who have "overlooked" this guy, now's your chance to see him. John Hartford is to bluegrass music as The Grateful Dead were to rock and roll- drawing from and learning all the roots- than taking those roots 10 steps furthur...
I found a a mint condition copy of Aereo-Plain on vinyl at a garage sale and just had to have it. I mean, with a cover like that, who could pass it up? I listened to it with my best friend on his old turn table, laughed and joked, and I told some stories about you. Thanks for the great memories and outstanding music.
