John has studied composition and received a masters in composition at the University of Kentucky under American composer Joseph Baber, who in turn, studied with Howard Hanson and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. John Hedger's original and yet unpublished work for solo guitar "Variations and Fantasia on a Theme by John Dowland" won the Toronto "Guitar 87" Quest For New Music Procan award in 1987. Johns setting of "Four Shakespeare Songs" won the Kentucky Oswald Competition in the early 80's. The recording clips of some of these works here were transfered from 20 year old cassette tape and may be somewhat crude in quality. The Henry VIII tune "Pastime With Good Company" is my own setting for lute, composed in Elizabethan style. The Spanish Pavan is an Elizabethan lute duo performed here with Rod Stucky at a Centre College recital in 2001. Please check back for postings of new original works for guitar & lute that I will be writing and recording. These compositions are unpublished and scores are available by contacting me here or at my website www.johnhedger.com...Mr. Hedger has studied guitar & lute in master classes and/or private lessons with Manuel Barrueco, Paul O'Dette, Narciso Yepes, Nigel North, Elliot Fisk, Eduardo Fernandez, George Sakellariou, David Russell, David Kelsey, Michael Fogler, and others. John Hedger currently teaches guitar at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY...at Berea College in Berea, KY...at Centre College, Danville, KY ...and at his private studio in Lexington at Don Wilson Music Co. Thanks for the friend request. So glad to discover your music. Lovely work. I confess to a preference for the lute music - the tone qualities of that instrument, for whatever reason, always evoke deep feelings that somehow I don't feel when the same music is played by the guitar. Anyway, glad to meet up on-line. Best wishes, Stan.
Hi John, hope everything is going great for you. Just stopped by for a dose of Dowland music. It's always a pleasure to listen to your playing. All the best from Canada, Joe
Thanks very much for friendship and kind comment about my sounds John... I like this opportunity to shared our worlds... The Life of a man is made up of a series of dreams which write our history, as well as our children, who then start to write their own. I decided to continue writing mine as soon as I began to dream in early childhood. One doesn't need to stop the journey along the way. It is necessary to believe that the stars which light our way will never go out, and to continue to follow our dreams which inspire us in the most beautiful moments of our lives. If not, why is my star helping me to write so many fine melodies? I composed a suite for my dream, called " Melody for an Oscar", and I am convinced that one day someone will help me to reach for that Oscar in Hollywood, which I have always imagined in my dreams. No matter what, my dreams have enhanced my musical creativity, and for that I am thankful. Warmest regards,
