John-Henry is a composer, drummer, DJ, and music producer whose output ranges anywhere from 8-channel surround-sound experimental algorithmic music, to live african and latin percussion, to multivalent West Virginian rock experiments, to gypsyfunk house music to weirdo hip-hop. It's all music in the end.
Streaming off Imeem just below is John-Henry's final thesis composition for his Master's in Digital Composition + Performance from the University of Edinburgh (UK). It's called "Syzygy" and you might want to fix yourself a beverage before you play it, as it's about 17 minutes long.
“SYZYGY” was written for 8.1/ 3-D (Eight speakers + one 26" sub surrounding the audience at ear and floor levels) surround spatialization format using Common Lisp Music, Ableton Live and ProTools. The composition deals with the history of music and musical instruments from primitive percussion to digital synthesis and uses Fibonacci series numbers for note frequency values, compositional structure and to create spirally spatialized sound environment around the audience. In the stereo version I play all instruments and composed/produced all parts, with the exception of the djembe beginning at 3:08 or so, which is played by U of Edinburgh Sound Design MSc grad, Pete Vilk.
John-Henry's composition "SYZYGY" recently landed him on the UK-based Sound and Music (SAM) organization's 2008 Composer Shortlist.
"Each year SAM runs an open Call for Works, from which it selects a shortlist of new works deemed worthy of professional performances. spnm then promotes the composers of these works for three years, programming the works throughout its nationwide season of events and offering further opportunities and professional development openings that are exclusive to shortlisted composers."
John Henry was also, apparently, a steel-drivin' man. He is currently living in Portland working on his debut album, Ghosthousework.
