Most of the time, It's just John (a.k.a."Me"), though from time to time I'll be joined by a rag-tag stray or two.
But, when I feel like cranking up the band, this is what the cast of characters looks like:
John Holt- Rhythm guitar, lead vocals; Sean Powell- lead guitar, vocals; Dave Reynolds- drums; Holly G.- bass; Karen Pignataro- backing vocals (icing on cake)
Influences
Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Blue Cheer, Mountain, Joel Cage, Jefferson Airplane, King Crimson, Rush, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Willie Nelson, Mozart, Skinny Puppy, Ian Charles, Big Sister, Spear Head, Eric Lichter, Waterwitch, Pearl Jam, Hendrix, ........fuck.......everyone I've ever heard gave me a little something, except for Brittany and Micheal that is........
Sounds Like
Johns' vocals sound like he might be the bastard offspring of a late night love-romp between Lou Reed and Joan Armatrading. Sometimes sweet, most times raw and powerful, always refreshingly his own. As for the band. They're a tight unit as they wind their way along the twists, turns, peaks, and dips that make up the musical landscape of Holts' prolific inner skull. You may hear hints of Crazy Horse, STP, The Dead, or even Pearl Jam.... Or you might not. They keep you guessing from song to song, and they always put on a solid live show.
After spending the nineties playing bass in numerous San Francisco bands with names like The Fuck-Ups, Hell on Wheels, The Strays, and Yer Mutha, John headed to Woodstock, N.Y. and decided to start performing his own tunes. After spending the early part of the century (that sounds wierd) playing solo-accoustic and attracting the attention of many, including EyeSeeMusic owner and phenomenal songwriter Ian Charles and legendary sound engineer Stuart Breed of Art Garfunkel, Paul McCartney fame, he got the electricity jones and decided to assemble a band. Enter the Thief. John recruited his childhood friend and kick-ass drummer Dave Reynolds, Sean Powell for his noteworthy and tasty lead guitar work ("reminiscent of the late Danny Whitten" Chronogram magazine Oct.2004), super slinky bass godess Holly G., and the well placed colors' of backing vocalist Karen Pignataro to form the loosley tight Generous Thief. Their first full-length studio album, "No Rest", is due out on the EyeSeeMusic label on April 18th 2006. The world needs some good honest Rock, and the Thief have the goods.
