Hello, I'm John Irvine, a contemporary classical composer currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I trained at Dartington College of Arts (Prep Course), RSAMD (BA) & University of Edinburgh (PhD) where I studied with Nigel Osborne. I have received commissions and performances from numerous ensembles and players both nationally and internationally (Argentina, Spain, Colombia, Greece, France and the UK). The origins of my compositional thinking begin with the free-jazz and fusion movements in the 1960s as well as the European and London-centred free-improvisation schools. This sphere of influence gradually shifted to include the work of the New York School (Cage, Feldman, Wolff & Brown), the European ultra-modernists and electro-acoustic composers from Canada (Dhomont, Gobeil et al).
I'm currently teaching Academic Music at The City of Edinburgh Music School and lecturing at Edinburgh Napier University in 'Music, Creativity & Communication'.
