I am the writer/director of 'HARRY CLARKE - Darkness in Light', an award-winning documentary on the life and work of Harry Clarke produced by Camel Productions (Dublin, Ireland). DVD available from camelproductions@gmail.com
"Illuminating" - SUNDAY TIMES
"Documentarian John J Doherty examines the life of Clarke and the controversial nature of his work, culminating in his clash with the conservative Irish Free State over his "offensive" masterpiece, the Geneva Window. Visually spectacular and poetically told, Darkness in Light is a fitting showcase of Clarke's unique and haunting vision." - BOSTON IRISH FILM FESTIVAL
"Best Arts Documentary Award" - CELTIC INTERNATIONAL FILM & TELEVISION FESTIVAL
"Best Documentary Award" - FANTASY WORLDWIDE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL TORONTO
"Harry Clarke (1889-1931), Irish stained- glass artist and illustrator, brought the beautiful and the bizarre to his work, be it church windows or illustrations for A Midsummer Night's Dream. This very complete documentary traces the influences on Clarke's work and on his life, e.g., the sea and Celtic design and the windows of Chartres Cathedral. Images from film, Russian ballet, and French art and literature moved Clarke to create dark and sensual works that bring to mind Hieronymus Bosch and Aubrey Beardsley. The Geneva Window, produced late in his short life, displayed all of these connections and brought down on him the wrath of the conservative Irish state. This excellent account of a fascinating artistic genius is recommended for Irish and large art collections. The sexual imagery might make this inappropriate for some high school classes." - Ernest Jaeger, Library Journal (USA)
I'm just dropping by, because I thought you (and possibly your friends) might get a kick out of this:
Synopsized below is one of the 1,000 films covered in my book, Animal Movies Guide. It was released last month, and it's doing really well so far! (Details at Amazon, or my blog) If you'd like a review copy, please contact me directly and I'll hook you up.
Strays 1991, horror and suspense
“They have nine lives. We only have one.” That’s the tagline for this not-so-scary horror movie about some very bad cats living in the basement of the newly-acquired home of the Jarrett family (Timothy Busfield, Kathleen Quinlan, and twins Jessica and Heather — the latter of whom went on, ironically, to star in a naughty-type movie called Cybersex Kittens). We never do learn why these cats are so mad and murderous, but they’re good at what they do. The industrious pusses manage to cut off the phone service, open vents, and murder the family’s hapless hound.
And don't forget...
... to drop by and check out the horror / entertainment / miscellaneous musings on my blog, leave a comment, or view/poach my friends!

John, thank you for contacting me. My husband, Greg, and I have written a number of articles about Harry Clark's life and work for "Stained Glass" magaine, as well as a piece on the Geneva Window for"Irish America" magazine. We've seen nearly all of Clarke's work that is in public locations, traveling throughout Ireland and the UK to do so; we saw the Geneva Window while it was undergoing restoration at the Wolfsonian (as well as since) and are lucky enough to live in New Jersey, a short distance away from Bayonne, so we've covered both places where Clarke's work is found in the US. We have yet to make it to Australia, unfortunately. We have visited (and written about) Abbey Studios in Dublin.
We've recently purchased a DVD player that handles disks from all regions, and would love to purchase your film. Do you have an agent here int he US? Please contact me. Thanks!
Hello John , thankyou for contacting me. What great news, a film about my favourite artist and fellow irishman. I have been waiting so long for this, up til now i have had to make do with publications on Harry and sporadic news paper articles. How may I acquire the DVD? I am in Arizona USA.
Hello Mr. Doherty,
Thank you so much for adding me. Quite a pleasure and honor. As chance would have it, I recently purchased this DVD from the National Film Network online! May I say that it is absolutely gorgeous.I have put it on pause many times and sat a blubbering fool. Thank you so much for allowing everyone to see all the magnificent grace and powerful beauty Mr. Harry Clarke has harnessed. I am truly greatful. Cheers to you!

John J Doherty....Whats up.....Wanted to say my piece about the Godfather of Soul......"James Brown is an American original. A king of soul and rock 'n' roll, Brown is one of the most influential musical artists of the last fifty years, and perhaps the most sampled artist in hip hop history. We are saddened by his death, but take comfort in his amazing, relentless legacy."
