Books
Author Jim Colucci follows up his "Will & Grace" book and gloriously reports on what many people consider the best TV show of the 1980s.... and perhaps of all time. The Golden Girls. This paean to the silver haired denizens of Miami is told through lavender glasses and I don't plan on leaving the house without them on ever again!
Jim covers why we are infatuated with this show. So much so that four gay guys got together in 2003 and did it for a charity run in the West Village called "The Golden Girls: LIVE!". Yes Peter and I were two of those guys...and we are interviewed for the book...a 4 page sit down interview in fact.... However, we are not biased and never have been about our deep affection for these four women. As such we have been wary the many other times that people have approached about being involved in any kind of GG project.
In Jim's delightful tome he has this to say about TGGL:
"In 2003. theater duo and real-life couple Peter Mac and John Schaefer created a stage show that honored the series (Golden Girls) more directly. With two gay male friends joining them as Rose and Blanche, Peter and John appeared as Sophia and Dorothy in Golden Girls...Live, their all-male drag version of the sitcom that sold out its limited four show run and eventually played sixty performances at cabaret room Rose's Turn in New York's West Village."
Further he says:
"Due to rights issues with the source material, their larger plans- including a new Dorothy/Sophia musical entitled "Shady Pines, Ma! - never materialized. But for the Golden summer of 2003, gays and their fellow New Yorkers could enjoy a 3D slice of their favorite cheesecake from Miami."
Jim, THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND! You can buy this book on Amazon! At the time of this writing Amazon was almost out of stock...so hurry!
Heroes
The brave men and women who lost their lives on 9/11.
About me: This autobiographical piece is based upon the true story of my life Partner, Singer/Actor/Writer; Peter Mac’s coming of age in a homophobic suburb of New York City. Peter grew up in the extremely narrow minded Elmont, Long Island which is just over the Queens border. There from the ages of 9 to 16 he was the daily target of both verbal and physical abuse from his classmates. Further compounding these injustices, his Teachers and Principals turned their heads at the clear abuse being endured by this tender, talented and “different” than most kid. Terrified for his personal safety he was habitually absent, cut out early and even contemplated taking his own life.
I decided to work with Peter to bring this work back to New York City after the horrible news of Laurence King this past winter. That event served as a painful reminder to both of us just how resonant homophobia still is among youth within the school system. In telling his story, Peter hopes to reach out to youth struggling with being gay, Parents to see the warning signs of abuse, and school officials who have the ability to take appropriate action to ensure this doesn't happen again.
John Schaefer was best described by author Jim Colucci (Q Guide to The Golden Girls) as a "Wall Street Consultant by day and 'male actress' by night"! He uses this skill set working for one of the largest software product companies in the world.
However, he is extremely right brained as well. An experienced emcee/master of ceremonies he served in this capacity at Club21 a nightclub and cabaret in Sacramento, CA. Additionally he revised and directed Capone’s Dinner & Show in Orlando, FL. This award winning production is now entering it’s 14th year. He has shared the stage with such luminaries as: Steve Allen; Jayne Meadows; Ginger Rogers; Burgess Meredith; and Jennifer Holiday. He is grateful to be working with his soul mate Peter. “…My heart is true you’re a pal and a confidante.” I love you.
John can be seen as Bea Arthur opposite his husband Peter Mac as Judy Garland in a series of cabaret shows in New York City. You may remember John and Peter as Dorothy and Sophia in the runaway 2003 NYC hit show "The Golden Girls: LIVE!"
Dealing with such issues as homophobia, domestic abuse and suicide, while also including the positive impact Judy Garland has had on playwright Peter Mac, which influence is reflected in the main character, Anthony "Tony" Castellano (played by Christopher Brick),.
Who I'd like to meet: This is Judy Garland introducing Bea Arthur,,,Bea then talks about the new book "The Q Guide To The Golden Girls" and Elaine Stritch...who was up for the part of Dorothy in Golden Girls as they were looking for a "Bea Arthur Type"...(and since I wasn't available I am glad they got the real thing....but I digress). In the video below Bea manages to pick on Author Jim Colucci who was in the audience with his husband Frank De Caro. So in borrowing from another Bea show :
