About me: John Laing is a sail training vessel operated by the charity Ocean Youth Trust South (http://www.oytsouth.org) to provide adventure under sail to people aged 12-25.
Building started in 1988 but John Laing was actually launched in 1990. She (despite the name, all ships are she) has introduced thousands of people to the challenge and excitement of the sea.
John Laing is 72 feet long and weighs 55 tonnes. She has accommodation on board for eighteen people: twelve young crew members and five or six adult sea staff.
She is based in Southampton, UK, and sails mainly on the south coast of England and to France and the Channel Islands. Every year she also does one major trip to somewhere further afield. In 2007 her sailing programme included Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Poland; this year, Norway and the Netherlands; next year, Russia, Finland and Lithuania!
John Laing is fun, informal, adventurous, exciting, challenging, original and friendly.
Who I'd like to meet: John Laing wants to keep in touch with all the people who have sailed in her, and hopefully make new friends - especially with people who would like to come sailing. New crew always welcome, no sailing experience necessary!
