MY FAVORITE DRUMMERS: ?uestlove, Matt Chamberlain, Steve Jordan, Steve Gadd, Vinnie, Nir Z, Dave Grohl, Ken Schalk, Al Jackson, Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Brian Blade, Willie Jones III, and Art Blakey.
When I was 9 years old my favorite band was Nirvana, so naturally one of my biggest idols was Dave Grohl. The way he smashed his drums just floored me and made me say, "I want to do THAT." My family recognized my interest and was immediately supportive: Mom found a teacher, Dad found a used drum kit, and my older brother, Ben, let me play in his band. The ball was off and rolling.
Since that time, studying music has been a constant for me. Aside from listening to lots of recordings, seeing concerts, practicing, playing in lots of bands, and taking practically every gig, I've also had the privilege of studying with some great teachers (BIG thanks to Jim Kassis, Mike Mangini, and Dave Dicenso for being great players AND great educators). Learning about music is a process that, for me, is endless. Calling it my life's work seems appropriate.
I'm a firm believer that music done right makes people feel really good. All people deserve to experience that kind of joy.
