The Verve, Doves, Ray Lamontagne, Elbow,The Stone Roses, Coldplay, Richard Ashcroft, Damien rice, Bob Dylan, 50s-60s Rock and roll, Dion, Lonnie Donegan, Eric Clapton, Glasvegas, The Charlatans, I Am Kloot, Johnny Cash and on and on and on..................
Born in Glasgow and raised in Manchester and Salford, music was always a big part of my life. As a child it was a typical Glaswegian set up. My parents enjoyed socialising at home with friends and the record collection belonging to my father always took a good hammering. The music playing was Country and Rock ‘n’ Roll and my earliest memories are of Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Dion, Bob Dylan, The King (Elvis), Lonny Donegan and the list goes on. My father owned two beautiful acoustic guitars and was definitely a frustrated musician. I used to try and steal a strum when he wasn’t around but that wasn’t where my decision to get into music began.
Living in Manchester in the late 80s early 90s was a privilege and definitely influences what I do now. However, I couldn’t let go of the skinhead and baseball cap. Long visits to family in Glasgow became a regular occurrence and I spent most of that time following my older cousin and his gang of Stone Roses lookalikes to every party and gathering. My big musical ‘awakening’ happened around 1994 at a hazy party in my cousin’s bedroom. I have a vague recollection of Mersey Paradise by The Stone Roses, early Oasis classics, Ride and The Charlatans. My world had changed for ever
This time the return to Manchester was different. The baseball cap was ditched and the hair became longer and in 1998 I joined my first band. The gigging and partying was fantastic but during this period, a desire to write my own songs was born and it was time to move on. The next band was a whirlwind, with record company interest, a sell-out show at Parr Hall in Warrington and a single recorded in Liverpool. However, having two song-writers in the band led to the inevitable clashes and once again I walked away, searching for my place in the world of music. One more band followed but it had already becoming clear to me that only John Mackie knew how John Mackie’s songs should sound and the time was right to go alone.
So here I am with my interpretation on life’s situations and emotions. I don’t believe in gimmicks and my motto is if you cannot do it live, then you’re faking it. Music is my life not my hobby. Songs are my feelings and my thoughts. If you find some connection with my tunes then come and seek me out.

Hi John, Thanks for the request. I like your songs. It's good to know you. Take a look at my new video of The Writing on the Wall from my 2008 acoustic album, Beyond the Blues. Quote from the wall: The wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly. Thanks, Steve
