It took this Ariel Pink cohort five years to write and record his debut album, and only five minutes to become more annoying than Ariel Pink. - CMJ
For me, this is just too weird. The first couple of tracks make this the most skip-able album of 2006. -Subba Cultcha
Apparently, Maus spent five years working on this album, which is a shame because, frankly, its awful. -Vice
There isn't one song you could call 'good' on the whole album. -Music Zine
Overall, I can't recommend this album even as a novelty listen. Maybe I just don't get it. It seems as if Maus sabotages practically any hint of an interesting melody, lyric, or instrumental part with a blatantly grating one at almost every turn. -Indie Workshp
Maus's baroquely deadpan voice - and thats being polite - effectively spoils many a song. Some will hear a little Nick Cave in it; others will hear a man crapping out of his mouth. -Drowned in Sound
If it is supposed to be funny, it is not. If it is meant seriousy, then Maus needs some SERIOUS help. -Another Zine
REVIEWS OF 'LOVE IS REAL' (2007)
His music now lacks the surreal, jarring juxtapositions that made his earlier work such a rewardingly confounding experience. Maus seems content to sing his heart out instead of rattling cages, which is rather a shame. -The Wire
I can't wait to get your album! boy,it's certainly flying right now betwen the US and my sweet town in south France! *check my space,John,I'd be really glad!* see you
love is real never stops. i was copulating and at the penultimate moment the end of Tenabrae was playing (inside or outside of my membrain i dont know) and seemed to expand the sensation infinitely.

It was really great to see you back here in LA. Fantastic show !! People are getting way hip to your sound now. Everybody is stoked about the MAUS !!! Christ!
either i'll return the love through years of consumer art and extreme loneliness, or i'll spread it beyond the known world through migratory, monkeyman bliss. it would help either possibility if you imply pure obliterating change with me in tucson. after all, music is more than the record i'm playing now, it's the unleashed ecstasy of harmonious survival.
i saw your show in oakland on friday. what was with the motley entourage? can't you pay a little more and get a better dressed hipster crew. bitches would fuck you then.
It was such a treat seeing and hearing you in Oakland last night after having listened to your music constantly for the last several months. Times is weird, as you know, but you can always trust the Bay Area to do you right. Hope to see you again soon, Maus.
"John Maus sings like a guy chained up in a basement who will have to eat his left nut if he stops. Some people will find the passion exhilarating, and others will pass him the salt."
I was totally going to buy something there and I didn't. If you have paypal I will send a few bucks for the show! Seriously!
According to the above-mentioned "reviews", my ears should have fallen off and I should be having a bad-music-induced seizure right now, at this very instant. Since that's not happening, I'm thinking you must have layered in Satanic commands amid all your tracks (played backwards, of course) that are now governing my every action. That must be the reason why I can stomach this ...and furthermore, keep on coming back to it. What other explanation is there?
when the air is too much, and the sky is sinking down on you, and your greatest fears are thrusting back into your world, all you can do is give a smirk.. a time of desperation calls for courage, blind courage.
