Brisbane singer-songwriter JOHN MEYER is a versatile indie troubadour. Edged-out and left of centre, his music explores territory ranging from lovingly hand-crafted folky pop tunes through to dramatic, atmospheric rock –with a broad repertoire of arrangements that can be fine-tuned to suit a range of performance spaces.
John is a well known presence in Brisbane indie circles, sharing stages with acts such as Kate Bradley, Polyvinyl, the Blood Poets, Chris Pickering, and Tom Cooney. He is a regular at many of Brisbane’s premiere music venues including the Zoo, the Troubadour and Rics Bar, and has undertaken a number of East Coast tours, playing venues such as Sydney’s famous Annandale Hotel and the Empress in Melbourne.
John's material invites comparisons with thoughtful pop icons Neil Finn and Rufus Wainwright, but also channels some heavier influences including Muse and the Killers. The folk sensibility of his early influences like Simon and Garfunkel and other 60’s folk legends, are counter-balanced by his penchant for layered, dramatic rock songs, drawing inspiration from such diverse areas as history and science fiction.
His early single ‘Circles’ appeared on the 2006 Hopesmiths Project compilation CD, where Meyer rubs shoulders with the likes of Bobby Flynn, Tyrone Noonan, Jackie Marshall and Tom Cooney. His track ‘Sweep’ appeared on a recent edition of the Sounds Like Café compilation, alongside Australian superstar Dave McCormack (Custard) and Swedish pop star Emilia de Poret. "Sweep" recently received a "Highly Commended" notice in the 2008 MusizOz Awards, and led to John being selected by Indieland as the face of a national Facebook ad campaign.
In 2008 John released his debut EP ‘Silver Bullets Don’t Work on Vampires’, which is out now through Autumn Recordings, and is available at selected retail stores, as well as through i-Tunes and other electronic music sites. The EP (recorded at Zero Interference Studios with much-loved indie producer Bryce Moorhead) was officially launched at the Brisbane Powerhouse’s Livespark on Sunday 9 November. This was followed by a well received East Coast tour taking in dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle and hometown Brisbane. The EP has received strong airplay around Australia as well as in the USA. The second single off the EP “Sweep” was launched with an east coast tour in late July 2009. 2009 sees Meyer continue to promote the record, as well as preparing for a second release later in the year.
John also plays in The Good Ship; see friends list below.(www.myspace.com/thegoodshipisaverybadship)
