lovesin

johnnie lovesin is a true master of the rock 'n' roll guitar. he has the distinction of having been the first act to open for the ramones outside of new york city, at the new yorker theatre (651 yonge street) in toronto, september of 1976. his independant single "tonight" (b/w a french language version: "ce soir"), was a rock 'n' roll, boogie woogie homage to the glories of bar-fights, and predates the recorded works of both the viletones and sex pistols. in the late 1970s, his method of forming bands based around musical residencies in otherwise unused club spaces, not only saw him act as mentor to an up and coming generation of young players, but directly led to the establishment of several venerable toronto institutions. i doubt, for example, that there would be either a "lee's palace" or "sneaky dee's" if it had not been for johnnie lovesin's vision of the scene's "new uses for old rooms". "when i see him face to face, i'll tell him you were ace, don't want to say i missed it - tonight!"

   About Johnnie Lovesin
Veteran rocker from ValD'or who got his start in the mid-1960's spent much of his career honing his guitar and songwriting craft in bars. With a reputation as a street punk, Lovesin got his start playing in Yorkville busking for change. In 1974 he was dubbing himself 'Crazy John' Lovesin: The Ace From Space. Fronting his own band in November 1976, Johnnie Lovesin And The Invisible Band opened for The Ramones at the New Yorker Theatre in Toronto and was observed by Toronto Sun columnist Wilder Penfield III as having blown The Ramones off the stage. Lovesin (now 'The Electric Kid') and his band open play at the Rock Shock Concert with Teenage Head and others in May 1977. Later that year, Lovesin and The Sidewalk Commandos get national exposure at the CNE Bandshell. Lovesin releases several singles on the short-lived SMILE Label. In 1978 Lovesin was blazing across the Canadian club scene with a band called THE N.E.X.T. who manage to open for the Runaways at The Elmocambo in Toronto. Lovesin set down in Toronto and in 1980 he releases "Set The Night On Fire" on Taxi Records featuring many backing musicians including Greg Godovitz (Goddo), Terry Hattie, Dave Stone, Doug Baynham, Greg McIlveen, Glen Morrow, Chris Gibb (The Deserters), and Dave Dobko. Following a nomination for a CFNY-FM U-Know Award in 1985 for 'Male Vocalist Of The Year' based on the airplay of "(I Need A) Working Girl" from his Amber Productions 'Rough Side Of Town' EP, Lovesin was signed directly to A & M Records. Supporting his 'Tough Breaks' album, in 1987 Lovesin performed at the Kingswood Music Theatre opening for Stevie Ray Vaughan. He also performed twice at Ontario Place, in Toronto -- with Big Sugar, backing him on one occasion. Lovesin has also been the subject of a MuchMusic "The Big Ticket" special, and still gets aired on to this day.
