Johnny Raven's Interests
|
| Music |
A great many of these artists I've seen 10 or more times, a couple I've seen 30 or 35 times, and gone to other cities or states to see them live, these are artists that mean a lot to me.
My four most vital artists are
Melissa Ferrick
Pamela Means
Patrice Pike
and
Danya River
I've never missed a local show for many years, and for some I've gone as far away as Boston MA or the state of Maine to see them perform live.
Some new artists that I have met and interest me a lot are
Chris Pureka,
and
Megan Slankard.
Some other artists that I have never missed a local show as long as I've known them, or in some cases I had to travel to other states to see them live (hope I don't forget anybody) are
Adrianne,
Laurie Anderson,
Joy Askew,
Bonfire Madigan,
Jonatha Brooke,
Edie Carey,
Marca Cassity,
Shawn Colvin,
Catie Curtis,
Susie Davis,
Kris Delmhorst,
Ani DiFranco,
Stacey Earle,
Ferron,

Happy Rhodes,
Colleen Sexton,
Sam Shaber,
SONiA,
Patti Smith,

The Be Good Tanyas,
The Waifs,
Noe Venable,
Chris Webster,
Gillian Welch,
Susan Werner,
Dar Williams,
and
Julie Wolf.
I used to see a lot of
Melissa Etheridge,
I saw her in smoky little bars starting back in 1988, saw her every chance I got, but after a few years she priced her shows beyond my budget, I cannot afford her shows anymore.
|
There are many other artists for whom I've missed some local shows over the years, so I've not listed them here, the list would be four times longer than the previous list, there are far too many to list here.
|
I don't often see male artists, I guess I just prefer women's voices, but some men I really like (and I've seen them every chance I got), some of these great artists are
John Mayall,
Peter Mulvey,
Willy Porter,
Justin Roth,
Xavier Rudd,
Elliott Smith,
Mark Spoelstra,
Paul Sprawl,
and
Richard Thompson.

MySpace usually functions much better with
Firefox, Safari, or Netscape (7, 8, or 9).
Opera and Internet Explorer (5, 6, or 7)
may have some problems with MySpace,
especially in certain CSS code, this is a
common issue with Internet Explorer,
IE ignores more W3C CSS standards than most other web browsers.

I love all kinds of music, but my first music love was jazz, I was 8 years old, but nobody told me "jazz is too complex for kids"...
I was introduced to jazz by some great singers like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, and Betty Carter, I was amazed by their music...
later I heard Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker...
many years later I was talking to a famous jazz artist after his show in Greenwich Village, and he told me the most concise yet the most complete definition of jazz I've ever heard, he said jazz is musical deconstruction and reconstruction with melodic and rhythmic displacement, I've carried that definition inside me for over 40 years...
of course now I hear all kinds of music, but I still listen to my very first music love, especially Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who I saw live at the Five Spot in Greenwich Village.

I know dozens and dozens of artists, some very well,
some will visit me at my home, some have stayed
with me when they're travelling on the road...
but the four most vital artists in my life are
Melissa Ferrick
Pamela Means
Patrice Pike
and
Danya River
(alphabetical order).
"Prejudice is the child of ignorance"
by William Hazlitt (1778-1830).

Pamela Means made one video over 10 years ago,
it was Up To Here from Bone Spurs
I placed a copy of this old video at
www.geocities.com/bab_news/pamelameans.html#video
|
I've never seen the actual video, but this is the
online version Pamela had on her old web site
many years ago, I saved it and recently found it
in my archives... enjoy this long lost video! :)

Who I'd like to meet:
I enjoy meeting all kinds of people, I have met many at shows while
waiting in line, have met about 200 people in real life that I'd
first
met on-line, everyone has something interesting about them. :)
