  • Heroes

I don't have any heroes, really. ...Well, aside from Angus Young of AC/DC. Other than that, I only have people who I immensely respect; people like Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, and PVP's Scott Kurtz. I also like Heather Armstrong of Dooce.com very much. And Howard Stern! My biggest influence growing up might have been Jim Davis (of Garfield fame), though I've grown out of his stuff now. I guess overall, I've never been the type to really have heroes. Just some people I particularly admire. It's up to you to decide if you're going to go down as a hero to someone or not.

My Flickr Photos

Well, I suppose it's about time I updated this...it's been a while! First off, my name is John, and I'm a cartoonist. I am addicted to cartooning. I have a website where you can check out my comic strip. Fortunately, the only addiction I have is cartooning. It's an addiction I have attempted to kick (or that has attempted to kick me), but it's always returned. Frankly, that's fine with me. It beats my old addiction, which was going to Tijuana, snorting cocaine and shooting heroin while a mariachi band threw flaming darts at my head at dawn.

Since April 1, 2008--which is, conveniently, April Fool's Day so nobody really knew if I was serious about this or not--I've been going to the gym almost daily in an attempt to slough off the spare tires I've been carrying around since birth. It's been going great, I'm feeling better, and I am more easily able to dodge mariachi darts. By the end of the year, I want to be somewhere in a healthy weight range, instead of a "surprisingly unhealthy" one. Then, for the next four or five months after that, it's going to be all about toning up and becoming a sexy bitch for pool- and ocean-side. Plus, it would be nice to be able to walk up a flight of stairs without my lungs popping.

I used to love playing guitar. Sadly, there are certain things that you can only do alone so many times before you really want someone else to join in, and playing guitar is one of those things. There might be guitar in my future again, but for now, it's on hold until I have an audience larger than one extremely perturbed cat.

I'm an only child and part of an overall small family, so don't ask me to play any board games (more like boring games, zing!). I never did learn how to play Monopoly. I...I think I might be able to play Checkers? I guess this is all just a roundabout way of saying that I'm self-sufficient and can be left alone for long periods of time, sort of like a Portuguese Water Dog (I am not sure if these dogs like to be left alone, but if so, it's a good example). I'm more introverted than extroverted, but I do enjoy going out and doing stuff with friends. Also, all of my friends are terribly attractive.

Somehow, I managed to graduate Magna Cum Laude (literally translated: "I have genius sperm") from Fresno State with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration; specifically in Information Systems, which is a fancy way of saying that I've sat staring at a computer screen for the majority of my waking life. I may be a cartoonist at heart, but a guy has to pay the bills, so I currently work as a graphics/web designer in the College of Agriculture at California State University, Fresno. I truly do love my job and the people I work with, and that makes it so much easier to get up and come to work every day. Heck, I would pay them! Ha, Ha, that is not true.

Bonus fact: My favorite color is blue. If you want to know more, AIM me up: RockCityJN

Here's a taste of just a few of my comics:

Who I'd like to meet:

Oh yea, busy is my middle name..the ONE day I had entirely off (yesterday) was devoted to 4 hours of sleep and a 13 hour hike up Half Dome. Wouldn't trade the expirence for anything, just wish I had more hiking muscles developed before climbing to the top of that thing! I got lots of pics to post, but the camera gotta charge ;)  I know..already MID October now!! Hope things are goin well with you and that you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Hey there.... Philly is where this year's national interpreting conference is... I leave at 7am tomorrow morning!!! I'm here for a full week of all day classes, trainings, seminars, presentations, trainings...all kinds of stuff to hopefully leave me a better interpreter than when I arrived :) EXPENSIVE but worth it. Since I passed my certification exam, I now have to retain that certification by earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and these back to back sessions will get me lots of them in one place! Hope things are going well with you..anything new? Takin it easy? How's the gym?? Any trips this summer? And can you believe it's AUGUST?!?! What the heck?? YEAR BY YEAR?!? Geeze..was hoping for more of a week by week kind of improvement. But yes...I hope that baby steps and improvement keep coming in the months ahead for ya. This was a HUGE surgery so you def gotta give your body the chance to heal.. and do so properly so that you don't deal with this forever. I KNOW; I hate that May 19th is coming so fast because I know that the time that Shar spends here will FLY by. YES I'm soooo down for making plots to get here down here.. just because..not for ANOTHER wedding... but just for us! :D oooo that would be AWESOME of you to go up to see her this summer.... FUN!! I hope that works out; you will have a blast!! lol yes yes, you got me; never enough sleep, but yes..my crazy busy days ware me out so that I sleep like a ROCK. I hope your weekend has been restful and peaceful :D Mine is mixed with a little bit of work and a little bit of play :) The way it should be :D Have a great week!!
  • Apr 25 2009 4:04 AM

No no no...you needed to recover!! I'm GLAD you went MIA so that you could properly recover without any distractions or bothers. It's been forever since I've gotten on this thing and been meaning to shoot you some GET WELL messages. I'm relieved to hear you are startitng to get better and that the dr was pleased..always a good sign :) Really?! How long is a 'pretty long time'? I know that having the surgery was the best (and only, probably) option and that you are in less pain now than you would be had you not gone through w the procedure, but pain for so long!? WHY!? I sure hope you take it easy mister. That stuff is serious and you need to be able to bounce of walls when Shar gets here :D Things have been crazy insane hectic busy here... aka the same :) Keeping SUPER busy and going a mile a minute! I'm sooo productive everyday and can't believe the amount of work that gets done by the hour! Maybe that's why I sleep so well... like a ROCK! hahah LOL.. k well if you wanna see the pic so bad hahaha... send me a msg with your email in it and I'll send ya some of the pics :D lol you crack me up.
You take care and REST and let me know if there is anything I can do!!

  • Apr 24 2009 12:47 PM

    I'm putting them on today!!
  • Apr 3 2009 5:04 AM

LOL yes...well sleep in general, I think, is overrated. My brain and body my not agree, but thats how the cookie crumbles darnit! SERIOUSLY..Shar's parents are the best and I'm soooo thrilled to see her and her mommy that day that we get to pick her up; crap why does this time always go by so slowly?! YES...I hate that you had to go through the surgery today, but I sure do hope that all that pain and suffering will go away and that your healing process is quick and succesful..I'll be prayin for a healthy recovery. ummm....yeah....might wanna adjust the weights a tad the next time you start back up at the gym. I say lay off the weight lifting for a while and work on cardio stuff. Oh yea; had a blast up in the mountains w my dad and bro; debating on posting a pic since it kinda has a HUGE dead turkey in it (that's right, I'm 2 for 2 and this one is about the same size if not bigger than my first one last year!!! Still sooo excited about it). You take it easy and let me know if you need anything. Get well soon and I'll talk at cha later.... I'm headed up to a cabin in Mammoth for some awesome snowboarding on Sunday..never a dull moment; rest up for the both of us would ja? haha K you take care and don't be doin too much too soon.
Bust out that ice cream and movies and enjoy while you can!
  • Apr 3 2009 1:25 AM

  • Mar 26 2009 12:38 AM

(I swore I wrote back..my bad!!) Every little thing with me is crazy and hectic; always doing something at every moment and sleep is a rare occurrence these days :) But you work hard and play hard, right? OH YES counting down every moment til our Shar gets here...esp since I get to meet her mommy half way and pick her up with Kaitlin!! YAY!!! oh my! surgery on the 2nd, hu? that's sooooon!! I'll be praying for you... let me know if there is anything I can do for you!! Hopefully you have LOTS of time to relax and eat as much ice cream as you can :D hee hee. Yea, 7 weeks should be enough as long as you take it easy and not push yourself too much, since that how this whole problem happened! ;) Yea, well the waiting game will be over soon and hopefully you will be feeling muuuch better.
Can't say I'm having more fun, but certainly pushing my limits of how much I can do in a day :D Hope your week has been going well; I'm off again this weekend for another hunting excursion with my dad and bro :) wish me luck!!
