John's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm going to write this as a pretty much straight biography.
Born in the deep hills and forest of southwest Missouri a mere 200 yards from Table Rock lake, I spent my early years wander the woods behind our house in an attempt to avoid the tortures of my older sister Debbie (just kidding, you know I loved all the sibling hazing). We moved to the much larger town of Crane, MO around 1986. Crane, population 1500. I went to high school there (didn't say studied), took martial arts in a nearby town, went to church in another nearby town, and pretty much tried to enjoy my youth as much as possible. My first rather large trial in life started around my junior year when my mother underwent treatment for cancer. She passed away shortly before I graduated (class of '92).
Major accomplishments during this time included:
*getting my black belt in Tae Kwon Do in 1991
*first kiss, age 17, a small miracle at the time
*president of my senior class which was won by default as the 2 other people running were presidents in other school organizations
Summary of the early years (1974-1992): I remember liking girls but having zero capacity being able to approach them. Church was a big deal. Family was a big deal. Cruising Crane was a big deal. Listened to a lot of GnR, Slaughter and just about any other '80s hair band that could rock a good power ballad.
The College Years (1992-1995): I started college immediately following high school. Missouri Southern State college was my first stop, where I accumulate a measly 22 credit hours. I was finding my study habits from high school were not suited to real academia and my dream of being a scientist-genius was becoming a little shaky.
I transferred to William Jewell College for a girl which, though was a huge tactical-life-error, did enable me to make some great friends and finally figure out that my scientist-genius goal was completely misplaced, mostly due to my atrocious study habits. I finally dropped out of college with around 80 below-average credit hours to my name.
Major accomplishments during this time included:
*sex
*the invaluable college-experience
*lots of debt
Summary of the college years: It was a totally bittersweet experience. I had a lot of fun but in the end it just cost me a ton of money and I left speeding directionless into the vagabond years.
The Vagabond Years (1995-1999): I left college with little in mind of what my future would or should become. I lived in Texas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Indiana. I hated all those states except Missouri and I'm sure I always will. These were the working years. I held a hodgepodge of jobs including; short order cook, fast food service, shipping coordinator, and youth pastor.
Major accomplishments during this time included:
*finding out I had Grave's disease (an extremely curable thyroid disorder)
*intermittent heavy drinking
*learning how to cook
Summary of the vagabond years: I honestly can't think of very many good things that came out of this time. I was confused slash bitter and I pretty much wallowed in that whenever things got tough. I did survive though and only had to sleep in my car once. Yay for small victories.
The Australia Years (1999-2004): Fall of 1998 I became a permanent part of the internet. I got into chat rooms and met a girl that lived in Australia. My mind was just ripe for doing something as crazy as following my heart, so with the help of tens of other internet friends I financed a round trip ticket to Australia to meet Gina. I didn't use the round-trip part of the ticket and got an extension on my visa. We really hit it off. For the first time in my life I felt like I had a purpose. She seemed to like me too, go figure. We got married July 24, 1999 and I applied and received a spousal visa. This is about the time I first started baking. They taught my everything thing I needed to know and I turned out to be very good at it. It was a great time in my life. Unfortunately (not strong enough a word but whatever), Gina, who had beaten breast cancer two times before, got it for the last time. The doctor gave her 13 months and it was exactly that time later she passed away. I stayed in Australia another 15 months. Her family was great. It was time that I moved back to the states though. It didn't seem like my life had any future in it all so I figured it might help to move near my oldest sister Sherry for some morale support.
Major accomplishments during this time included:
*true love
*great friends and family
*learning to deal with the dark horrible side of life
Summary of Australia: The best years of my life, by far. I grew up in so many ways just moving down there and I grew up infinitely more dealing with the loss of Gina. In the end I felt like I was done with life and it was hopefully done with me.
The Oklahoma Years (2004-2008): I moved back to the USA and went straight to Oklahoma, where my sister had lived for almost a decade. She insisted I didn't work for a while so at first I just hung out with her, catching up on all those years we missed since our mom had died. I finally got a job baking. For the first couple of years, I can't say I really got up to much of anything. As time went on though, I started coming out of my thick stubbornness I created trying to deal with being a widower. Toward the end of 2006 if realized that I wanted to be a writer, a published novelist. Near the beginning of 2008 I started taking martial arts again. Just about two months ago I bought my first house. More and more, goals and dreams started forming in my head. The idea that my life was over (which seems silly now but when you lose someone so close, your mind thinks these things) was gone.
Major accomplishments during this time included:
*being reunited with my sister
*a halfway decent income
*several epiphanies
Summary of the last few years: It was just what I needed, coming to live here near my family. We've had a lot of fun and I've start to plant some real roots here. I'm sad that it's Oklahoma, I'm not a huge fan of this state but it's as good a place as any to start my life again.
The Present (2008 and beyond): This all brings us to the present. Though I've started to write several novels, I'm working on one now that is coming so much easier than anything else has that I'm completely excited. I'm doing Taekwondo again and just started taking Kung Fu (a life-long dream of mine). I have a really nice house and the best cat in the entire world, Nova. Good friends, good family, goals and dreams.
So there, I think I finally wrote a biography that I don't completely hate.
