NEW ALBUM ON SALE NOW!
Following many successful years on the European Bluegrass and Country scene, Johnny Butten relocated to the US' early 2008. Following the release of his album 'Solo' he set about putting his band together.
Newgrass Underground is that band. The name was chosen because the band feel they are not 'traditional bluegrass' but more akin to the Newgrass sound and 'Underground' being the name of the English tube train system on which JB spent a good deal of time when he worked as a session musician/sideman in and around the London area.
Joe 'Guitarman' Smart hales from Washington state. He came to join the band following an email he received from Bill Evans and Megan Lynch. Joe contacted Johnny and became good friends and a valued addition to the band.
Craig Mozley and Johnny were introduced to each other via a mutual friend. Originally from California, he keeps everyone together with some fine bass playing.
This band is setting new standards in bluegrass and acoustic music. Bluegrass, Rock, Country, Blues, Folk, and Jazz, they do it all and with such precision, improvisation, unique individuality and fun. Their music is energetic, clean with strong bluegrass roots though their material can be somewhat diverse, incorporating tracks from artists like 'The Beatles', 'Eric Clapton', Asleep at the Wheel and even Hank Williams Sr. Self penned well crafted songs and intricate instrumentals and sweet harmonys are all part of this hot band.
Old bluegrass classics are given a 'twist' and a facelift to make them more appealing to todays market. There is some superb musicianship in this band yet each one of them is humble about what they do, and they just love to please an audience. A 'New' band, yes, but rookies to the scene?? NO!
